Paul McGrattan's Instruments...

So, forgive me in being quite the late-comer in discovering the awesome style of Paul McGrattan’s playing. My question is: does anyone happen to know the make of flutes/whistles he plays?

In particular, on “The Frost is All Over” the Christmas Eve set on the whistle is about the must musical recording (IMO) of a whistle I’ve heard to date. I’m sure there are others, but let’s leave that for another thread.

I’d just like to know if anyone happend to know the makes used on that particular recording or not. I was told that perhaps Paul himself has been known to show up over here from time to time?

Just curious…

Whad ya say Bri-Guy.

I just checked some old e-mail to confirm something sent to me in March of '01.

When I asked “who plays you’re flutes that I would know,” Hammy Hammilton said Paul used Hammilton flutes in his solo recordings and also in his recordings with Beginnish.

That should do the trick.

Thanks Mark.

Any guesses on his whistles? Does Hammy do anything other than flutes?

I’ve just dug out my copy of ‘The Frost is all over’ and the sleeve notes confirm that"The D flute used on this recording was made by Hammy Hamilton of Cuil Aodha,County Cork and the Eb flute by Peter Hunter of Bradford,Yorkshire,England. The sleeve notes on the album ‘Within a mile of Dublin’ confirm that Paul’s flutes are made by Hammy Hamilton. This still leaves us with the mystery of the whistle used..

Hey Kevin,

Peter Laban just replied to my inquiry over on the whistle board, and mentioned he believes Paul uses Generations. or at least he DID use Generations when “Frost…” was recorded. Also mentioned something about a whale bone whistle too. Sent me a soundclip - just amazing!

That’s IT! I’m moving to Miltown-Malbay!

Mr. McGrattan will be teaching at Irish Arts in the Catskills this summer.

I took Frank Claudy’s class at East Durham last year which was in the room just a bit over from Paul McGrattan’s class. Very nice fellow, he came over one time and showed us how it was a flute is supposed to sound.

I need to get a copy of his new solo album. He said this summer he was very happy with the way it turned out.
