I have a page on geocities http://www.geocities.com that is pretty easy to use. They have a website builder that runs through step by step on how to make your site with differerent templates and style sheets. They have popup ads but all the free ones do.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jim, but we have “pop-up stopper” on our computer and we can’t get in to GeoCities, Angelfire and others like that. That is my problem.

You may need to turn off the pop-up stopper to use any of the free web hosting services. Selling ads is how they are able to offer “free” services.

It’s also worth asking GeoCities about their fee schedules for their paid sites, if you really need a site without ads. As I recall, they’re quite reasonable…we supported a site there for our church for years.

As far as not requiring a knowledge of html, that’s easy. If you have Netscape, you have a feature called “Composer” that is a wysiwyg web page builder. You’ll want to build your page off-line anyway. I’ve tried various web page composition tools, and Netscape Composer is probably the easiest and stablest.

If you have an ISP account (where you pay a monthly fee, dial up a connection, surf the net, and receive e-mail), you may already have set aside for you enough room for a “home page.” That’s where my first web page went. It has a kooky URL (http://www.ispcompany.net/~username, for example) but it’s a full-fledged web site.

It doesn’t sound like choosing between types of servers is an issue for you, so check it out.

http://www.freewebspace.net has a complete list of free providers, complete with how much space you get, how you upload, what kind of ads if any, etc. Check it out.

Brinkster.com offers one of the better free services. One of the few that still doesn’t impose popup ads. You can just build your pages on Netscape Composer (which is free) or MS Word, and upload them to Brinkster, using their simple web-based interface. Here is a site I built that way: http://www16.brinkster.com/arminian/rudiments/Rudiment.htm

Or you could save a few cents a day and spring for a professionally hosted site on http://www.bluedomino.com like the last (edit) 4 I did. The cost is $109/year, for which you get 50MB, a bunch of email boxes, a database, scripting, and they only charge $20 to register your URL for you. I have been extremely pleased with them - so much so that I’m hosting the Serpent Music site there, along with two for a couple of my daughters, and one for my wife’s business.

Blue Domino receives my highest recommendation! I am not employed by them, nor do I get any favors for telling you about them.

Generally, free hosting sites are worth what you pay for them.
