We’re considering a personal webpage -
we don’t want to sell anything and do not want to be put in any listings or directories - just a website to post our writings and opinions about things, etc. But we really don’t know how to go about it - everything we have found so far has to do with a website community directory. I’ve noticed that many of you have personal websites so I thought maybe you guys could give us some info. Is it possible to create a website and not have any ads? How do we get started?

Who is your Internet service provider? You usually get some space on their server for a Web page as part of the fee for your email account. If not, and you live in a medium/large city, check to see if there is a community network. Community networks will usually offer Web space for little or no charge.
http://www.eccentrix.com provides free accounts and your webpage will not have ads on it. They only give you 15 megs of space, but if all you are putting up there is personal stuff, that should be plenty.
Bretton - we have AT&T cable and it does offer a free web page and we checked it out but if we went with that we’d be listed in a community with other websites and we didn’t want to be listed. But thanks anyways.
