So I open up my homepage and MSN has the following tidbit:
“Are 1 in 5 Teens Bipolar?”
“Hmmmm, interesting”, I think as I click.
"Three out of four of my sons are teenagers…
“I’m surprised to hear (and I doubt very much) that 20% of all teenagers are bipolar…Where did that data come from???”
and of course, just like I figured, it’s 20% of teenagers admitted to the psychiatric unit at Bradley hospital in Providence RI.
Well now, Dix, be fair. MSN is asking YOU the question. You are supposed to consider their headlines food for thought, not news. They are giving you a research topic for the day and you are expected to do the research, not them. They don’t have the time, you do. They just put up possible news topics and then you try to find out if there is any actual news or not.
I bet the real numbers are something like “3 out of 4 teenagers have raging hormones and are very impressionable!”
(the fourth teenager in every sample group is really a forty year old man hitting his mid-life crisis! )
