One of the first things we were taught in interrogation training was never to ask choice-type questions with “or”, exactly because they can be answered as Cran did. (But it’s not a problem with languages that distinguish exclusive “or” from inclusive “or”.)

Mine have been known to come up with a 3rd (or 4th) or when they feel like they are being trapped into an answer. Kind of like a wild animal when cornered…they look for a way out

My mother was a teacher for 12 years and a headmistress for 18. This may explain why she always poses two part questions, and I always answer yes or no to force her to restate the question.

Logicians have actually come up with name for the trick of giving people fewer than the full list of alternatives. It’s called the fallacy of false dichotomy.

Now, when your kids start saying: ‘Mommy, you’re commiting the fallacy of false dichotomy again theatrical sigh’ you know you’ve got a bunch of brats …er … I mean, intelligent little persons.

This thread brought back a chilling memory: when my daughter was three or four – I mean young – she’d done something wrong (I don’t remember what) and I doled out a punishment (I think it was banishment from tv for a day or two). She said, “What’s that got to do with what I did wrong?”

I expected her to be much older before she would call me on the importance of punishment fitting the crime. I still remember the chill I got when I realized she was much smarter than that and I was going to have my hands full. (I was right.)
