Name that tune

On Liam O’Flynn’s CD, Piper’s Call, the 9th track, the Humours of Carrigaholt, is a series of 4 reels. LOF names them all except for the 3rd one, which IMHO also happens to be the nicest of the four. Does anyone know the name of the reel?

I thought that the 3rd tune was Tommy Peoples’ which DJM was asking about in another discussion. Is the last tune The Westport Chorus? I have the tunes as Humours of Carrigaholt/Major Harrison’s Fedora/Tommy Peoples’/Westport Chorus. Corrections to any errors are highly solicited.

I just checked the sheetmusic on thesession.org and it looks very close. So close, that I think you are right. What a coincidence? Two questions about the same tune on the same day. I’ve been listening to the Pipers Call for the past few days on my drive to and from work and it’s the one tune that I keep humming as I sit at my desk.

Now all I have to do is learn it on the pipes!!

Thanks, Bill.

(Edit in)

I just checked the comments on thesession.org for this tune and guess what it says … give up? Well here it is:

this great reel is the third of the humours of carigaholt set in liam o’flynn’s pipers call album. he plays it on a flat set of pipes in b and its just very nice. in the sleeve notes he states he has never seen a name associated to this tune.

Ha!! This is an efficient forum.

I may be quite wrong but I found a tune very similar to tha last one in the set of reels… I think it was called the Blue or Green  Pigeon
CRnE vol 4 or 5

Actually, the one O’Flynn says he can’t remember the title of is called the Green Pigeon - that’s the one after Tommy People’s. The Green Pigeon has been one of my favourites for a long time (good choice!).

Amazing!!! I’ve just been learning that tune myself this week after hearing it on The Piper’s Call. I looked it up on The Session and it is 'Tommy People’s (The G major one) - the only difference being the slight variation in the B part where in the 1st bar rather than playing the two Es, O’Flynn plays a B and a G respectively, and in the 2nd bar rather than playing top B, he plays back D, plus a few other minor differences.

Cheers,

If I’m thinking of the same tune it is also the first tune on the first track on the 1983 pre Altan album Ceol Aduaidh by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Frankie Kennedy.

When it is played at sessions in Manchester it is almost invariably followed with the tune they play after it on that album.
