There is a single reel called Tommy People’s. Whenever I hear it, people are playing it differently. Does anyone know of an available recording where Tommy himself plays this? I’m curious to know what the original version was like. Does it go by other names (to help my search)?
Liam O’Flynn plays a tune called Tommy Peoples’ on "The Piper’s Call cd. I learned all 4 tunes on that particular track and had forgotten about them until now. Seems like a great time to resurrect them. Thanks!
If this is the tune I think you are talking about, Tommy dosn’t even know it. I was doing a gig with him a few months back and asked about it, and he said he knew nothing about a tune with his name. I played it, and he said he had never heard it before. Tommy tends to find more creative names for his tunes!!
As GalegoMan noted, Tommy plays the tune on his CD “Waiting for a Call”. He is accompanied by Sean Og Potts on UPS. Perhaps that is how it got into the piping repertoire. The tune is named “Tommy People’s” on the CD. It is quite possible that Tommy is sick to death of the tune and was just leading you on.
The Tommy Peoples name goes back to the first pre Altan lp. A lot of people learned it off that. I certainly did during the 80s, Sean Og Potts played it at the time as well. It’s also number 166 in Ceol Rinnce na hEirreann vol 2, writte nby Breandan Breathnach from the playing of Tommy Peoples in 1968.
A few years ago at a concert in Doolin Liam Flynn gave it the name Bobby Casey had for it : The Farting Badger.
So far, I like this site the best. If you are looking for the notation, select a tune you want to find, click find, and when it comes up, select the gif format and it will display the notation.
Well, I’ve never used “Tune-a-Tron”, but I suspect that it may not have liked the fact that I pasted the tunes onto the message without an index number (X:1). I see I also omitted the title label (T:) as well. I wasn’t thinking, sorry!
