Tune check

Anyone know the names of these tunes?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szLBmn9qAps&feature=related

second tune is Mayor/Major/Meyer Harrison’s Fedora
third one is Tommy Peoples’ (I think that’s what it’s called anyway)

The first is Humors of Carrigaholt (but the MC gave it away anyway :wink: ).

The third I know as Tommy Peoples’.

Mayor Harrison’s Fedora is named for a former Chicago Mayor, Carter Harrison, a contemporary of Francis O’Neill. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carter_Harrison,_Sr.

You know, I wondered if that might be that! I kept wandering off into O’Connell’s Trip to Parliament though so got stuck there. :boggle:

I’ve met a John (Jack) Flynn from Carrigaholt; astounding whistle & flute player (and a total wild man). I wonder if he’s a cousin to Liam & crew? Got a great tune from him called “Never Look Down On Your Ass.” (of course it’s about a donkey; whadjathink? :wink: )

Aaah, thanks for that, Pat. I’ve always wondered about that tune’s story. I figured it was newer; there’s something so … well, newish … about it.

You know you HAVE to post the Flynn tune now, Cat. :slight_smile:

(NOTE: Not suitable for gentler sensibilities)

If ever you purchase a donkey,
Let no man say it’s not class,
Some people may call you an eejit,
But never look down on your ass

{CHORUS}

Always be true to him
Never say boo to him
Feed him on carrots and grass
Be like a brother and love one another
And never look down on your ass

You’ll find he’s a handsome young fellow
All decked out in harness and brass
And there’s no better road you can follow
Than the one that runs under your ass

{CHORUS}

And when you go do the shopping
And buy too many groceries after Mass
You can parcel up the whole glommeration
And pack it back home on your ass

{CHORUS}

And when you go out on the batter
And drink too much porter and Bass
When faced with the Breathalysator
Say “Garda shove it right up me ass”

{CHORUS}

:smiley:

My fella sings it and does a mighty job of it, too.

These tune can been found on the The Piper’s Call CD by Liam O’Flynn

Quoted from the CD sleeve notes Track 9. The Humours of Carrigaholt Set
These four reels are played on the flat set (B). The first, The Humours of Carrigaholt, I heard played by the late John Kelly, a great fiddle player and a fascinating man from Carrigaholt in Co. Clare. This is followed by Major Harrison’s Fedora, which makes a very fine piping reel. The third, a really beautiful tune, I unfortunately have never had a name for. Finally a reel I heard from the great flute player and singer Cathal McConnell. Cathal traces this tune to the Donegal fiddle player Johnny Doherty.

Cheers

Ferg

I’ve heard Flynn the last one ‘The Farting Badger’

The third tune: The Badger’s emabarrasment might be releived, as Ceol Rince etc has it as Tommy People’s, but also known as Mooney’s. This is from from the English translations done by the worthy bunch of scholars. CRE Vol II, 166.
