What is the name of this tune? I used to know it (the name ) years ago when I heard an old recording on the pipes of it. Can’t recall the piper now… see? See? Cerbral flatulence.
The amazing thing (to me anyway) is that I haven’t heard that air for probably 20 or 25 years, but when I listened to the MP3 file the name just drifted into my head.
I believe that’s the version I am trying to remember. If I recall correctly (… yeah, right), it is one of the most beautiful renderings of that air I have heard to date.
We used to hear this air a lot in sessions around my neck of the woods (Washington DC) several years ago - and not always in the best of circumstances. It was the tune of choice for one of our beginning box players, which was okay as he didn’t do all that bad a job of it for a beginner. But there was also this guy who used to show up a lot who played either the mandolin or (arrrgh) the mando-banjo. He might have been okay at whatever his real music was, but he didn’t have a clue about Irish music. We never knew what his name was, so we just referred to him as Mando-Banjo Man and we knew that any night he showed up was bound to end up being a lousy session. Anyway, to get back to the topic at hand, one night he decided to play this air on the mandolin, with all the tremelo effects that are really only appropriate in a red-checkered-tablecloth Italian restaurant. When he was done, Rob Greenway cracked “For Tuscany I’ll Not Tell Her Name”.
I actually still like the air, though. On one of their earlier CDs Dervish did a really nice version of it with Cathy Jordan singing the song in Irish.
Nope. I’ve never seen that guy in your picture. Whoever he is, I hope he has more musical taste than the guy who used to show up in Nanny O’Brien’s for the session.
No, that’s not me, although I have played gigs with these people a couple times.
Oh good! I’m relieved. He does play the mando-banjo though. And the bombarde. I’m recording a thing for his band’s new CD this very afternoon. Whatever makes him think it’s a good idea to have me playing Welsh music on the uilleann pipes on thier new CD, I’m sure I don’t know. He said he’d pay me, so I’m doing it, but I suspect I’ll regret it.
Just be sure to avoid all photographers and forego any listing in the sleeve notes of the CD, Kelly, and you should be okay. I’m sure no one here would dare rat on you.
But if they try to make you wear the costume, run screaming away!
