Houston Flute Summit ~ Choose yer Date

So, anyway, for anyone wishing to momentarily escape the debacle that is “Wilkes 8-Key Flute”, here are a few choices for dates:

Sept. 25th, Oct. 9th or Oct. 23rd.

If these dates are not satisfactory to the majority, then simply choose a different venue, and date, and I will try to attend.

Let’s hear it from those who are interested.

Whatever’s fine for me, I think. How far away do you live (==> how long does it take to get to the medical center from your place, if I am on call that weekend?)?

I’m thinking about sending a surrogate to the HFS. Maybe Jessie’s father.

Stuart

What’s the Houston Flute Summit?
it sounds intriguing.

Come on out!

We’re trying to arrange a gathering of wooden flute listers in this part of the world. We’ll bring out our flutes, compare, and have a few tunes and some good food, drink, and conversation.
Tentatively, I have offered my kitchen, and a few dates that would work for me.
If that won’t work, then as suggested, pick another venue and that’s fine, too.
This is strictly for the fun of it.

My home is north of Houston, probably a 45 minute drive from Medical Center. If anyone wants to come in from out of town, there are any number of great places to stay and things to do out here. It’s a really beautiful place.

I would be thrilled to have Jessie’s father, or Jessie herself, join us!

Just to let y’all know, here are a few tunes I am currently working on, from WFO 2:

Fig For a Kiss/The Slopes of Slieve Gullion

The Bould Thady/Sean Coughlan’s Jig

Killavil/Miller’s Maggot

Huh… all jigs/slip jigs.

Give me a few others to try ~ we’ll all be on a page together…

So, who else is in on this thang? Eddy? Big Tex?

Mary

Actually, that’s not a bad idea, Dix, to have a list of Tunes To Know for the thing. Then we can all sit around and make up variations and stuff.

Do we have enough Eb or Bb flutes to have a non-D session, I wonder?

Stuart

I have a Hammy Eb that I love.
Also, I just got my Hammy Keyless blackwood D about a month ago.
I have finally found my “voice” ~ I am monogamous, at long last.

Mary

Sept 25th is probably the best for me. I can be a bit flexible on the other two if that doesn’t work out, but I’ll have to check.

Sept. 25 is fine for me.

Anyone else?

Mary

Is it strictly flute, or can low whistlers come too? I live in Houston. I’ve high Bb and low Eb in addition to low D and low F to accomodate for any non-D stuff. Pweeeeeeeeeeez?

Ben

Well, H*** Yeah!

That would be great! I’ve got a low F, as well as a few other nice whistles you could try!

Mary

FYI for those in Houston, the Celtic Festivals are starting up again at a new location downtown. I went to the one this weekend, don’t know why I didn’t think to post about it here, sorry.

Personally I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as when they were at the Garden in the Heights, that place had much more character. But, it was better than not having it at all and we met folk in the parking lot with extra tickets, so that was nice.

They’re planning on a christmas one, with Brother coming! A great Celtic-Rock band from Australia for those like that sort of thing.

Hopefully this will take off again and they’ll get more acts.

SWEEEEEEET! Let me know when & where - 25th of September? Saturdays look to be good for me in general as long as I don’t have a gig…

My low Eb and high Bb are actually for sale if anyone’s interested - Susato former and Silkstone latter. Both fine whistles.

The rest of my lows are Phil Hardy, whose work I try my best to play exclusively

I’m looking for a killer high D at the moment if anyone knows of one…Stu?
