Mary, I’m planning on going to the session at the Duck on the 9th provided there actually is one - not sure if they’re cancelling due to Ash Wednesday, but I’ll check on it. Wanna come?
I’ve been having nice thoughts about your Olwell recently - my friend Justin Murphy here in New Orleans (one of the great flutists alive today) is expecting a brand-new 6-keyed one soon.
Oh, and I almost forgot - I just checked the Duck calendar, and there is indeed a session on the evening of the 9th (Ash Wednesday). I vill be zere with a couple of recent eBay whistle acquisitions
Thanks! In a few days I’ll put pics up on the ‘greetings from india’ thread.
Been a big Justin Murphy fan since Poor Clare days. He’s one of the players who got me interested in flute. Around Christmas Turlach mentioned they were trying to find a date to play the Duck in Mar/Apr but I didn’t see anything on the schedule last time I checked.
Given my current work situation, I could do a weekday meeting, say Feb 14th or so.
There’s actually been a bit of a change of plans - I’m now coming home on Thursday afternoon because I got called for a gig on Saturday night that I can’t pass up. So, that adds a few more days that I’ll be in H-town.
I’m actually coming back to N’awlins on the afternoon on the 14th. Any of the days prior though would be perfect.
Alright, we HAVE to have a get together now and Stu HAS to be there so we can all bow to the whim of that flaming, curly, creamy, tasty, boxwood keyed Olwell goodness.
Oh yea, and for any of you who have never been to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, I HIGHLY recommend it
I’ll be home this coming Tuesday, and will be playing in the session Wednesday night at the Duck - let me know what’s up with y’alls’ schedules.
Sorry guys, I’m completely booked until at least the 14th. Busy fighting a stomach bug I picked up in India and getting stuff ready for the wedding here in town this weekend.
Good news, I lost 10 pounds because the bug has killed my appetite.
Two things which I guarantee will help next time you go to India:
(1) It’s hokey, but do the Pepto thing. Get PeptoBismol (or generic) chewable tablets, and chew two at the start of each meal. Bismuth (the ative part of Pepto) is an excellent antibiotic/anti-parasitic: it can actually bind pathogens in the food you eat.
(2) Consider, in combination with 1, taking Malarone for malaria prophylaxis. It’s a once-a-day pill, MANY fewer side effects than Larium. It’s also active as an anti-parasitic in the intestine.
As a third aside, take along Cipro if you’re not allergic (not allergic applies to everything I’ve said), and take it if you develop any diarrhea. It kills all the major intestinal pathogens as well.
I’ve made several forays into the third world using this regimen, and, knock on wood, have had ZERO GI symptoms. I’ve gotten sicker in France.
I actually took Malarone the whole time I was there. I’ve been taking Cipro for 48hrs when the stomach didn’t clear up. I think the loss of appetite came from the Cipro and not the bug, I have an appt with a doc on Wed, in case it hasn’t cleared up by then.
