Eddy: Your pictures are great! That was the best weekend I’ve had in such a long time. I really hope we can all get together again!

MAry

GrendelJi, I am curious about the light coloured flutes in the “Table O’Flutes” picture (I don’t mean white and metallic ones). There are three in front and another one in the big row. Can you ID?

(Talasiga’s Edit Note:-
I have taken the picture out now because it was throwing the margins out of whack. The picture can be seen in Beowulf’s link Clickety](http://www.heorot.org/blog/archives/cat_houston_flute_summit_2004.php%22%3EClickety) Click)

I think I can. The one in the large row is a Casey Burns boxwood flute in C.

In the front are Olwell bamboo flutes in D and F, and a Sweetheart flute in F.
But I don’t know the wood for that particular Sweetheart.

If I may draw attention to the Jerry Freeman tweaked Shaw whistles ~ they sounded gorgeous as played by Ben!

Mary

that table o’ flutes pic is, like, the very definition of too much fun!

(where the heck is that :raging flute envy: emoticon?

:sigh: /dan

I know, I was going to beg - that the table would be shrink wrapped as is, and rolled down here to CA.
What are the keys flutes?
the one on the left - Eb? and the few on the right?
Why don’t the door to door Jehovah’s whiteness’s sell flutes!!!

Mary, I can’t get over you! You are one of the nicest people I know (but have never met in person), and you are so beautiful! I can’t believe that body had four kids!! I think I’ll go hide. Just one little baby and I’m all puffy!

Jessie: My Goodness, my 4th “baby” just had his 13th birthday! Besides, you’ll note that I am hiding all 5’10" of me behind the table ~

Eddie’s fiancee is truly beautiful!

It was the music that day that held all the magic. These guys can really play!!!

Eilam, Larry had antique flutes you would love to see!

Mary

Yeah, I keep worrying those drugs I gave her are gonna wear off and she’s gonna realize who she’s stuck with…a big geek with a book and flute obsession. Thanks, that made her smile.

If I had been there I would have played those light coloured flutes
and only those (other than mine).

How did the Sweetheart F compare with the Olwell bamboo F?

The five on the far right were my contributions, along with the keyless Olwell D flute in the foreground.

The five, each with eight keys and in D, were, in uncertain order:

Rudall Rose Carte 6225, reddish coccus, large holes, around 1860 - my best liked flute so far

Rudall Rose 4256, black coccus, medium small holes, 1841 - great flute

Wylde from Rudall Rose No Serial Number, reddish coccus, medium small holes, probably 1840-1850 - very nice flute

No name german flute (I call it my Sears & Roebuck flute, since its picture seems to be in the Sears Roebuck catalogue pages posted else/some-where on-line), brown coccus - medium holes - very nice flute, if quiet. An amazing ebay steal for $140.

Christopher Wilkes Rudall Rose reproduction, large holes, 1994-ish - great flute

We had a blast, even if attendance was below expectation. At least five other local wood flute players were out of pocket. Maybe next time!

Thanks, Eddie, for the pix.
Thanks, Mary, for the hospitality.

Thanks Larry.
One more… there is a reddish keyless with slide and silver rings (forth from the bottom on the first picture), is that an Olwell? and what wood?
thanks again, eilam.

Yeah, I know I wasn’t there, but . . .

I’d have to say that it’s not, since (a) the rings look flat, and (b) I haven’t ever seen an Olwell with that kind of body style (“foot” integrated into split lower hand). I’m sure the owner can fess up, though.

But what is it? And whose?

Stuart

Oh, yeah; when’s the next one?

And is there any interest in doing something quasi-session-esque that’s NOT ON bloody WEDNESDAY NIGHT TOO LATE FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE TO BE AT WORK AT 6:00 a.m.?

Sunday afternoons? I think it’s been tried before, and it didn’t work, but if there are close to 10 of us, it might work for SOME people.

Stuart

Hey, great pics, Eddie!

Mary, I’m really enjoying the flute - thanks sooooo much again for letting me borrow it! I’m actually starting to get some sound out of it now - practiced on it all day today since I had a day off! Such great fun! Maybe at the next HF(W)S I’ll actually be able to competently try some flutes, too, and all thanks to you!

Sunday afternoons are fine with me - I’m sure I could work a room out over at the music school at Rice if need be. No one’s hardly ever using the big classrooms over there on Sundays. Has anyone thought to contact the Harp & see if they’d be willing to give the session a second chance? In any event, I’d definitely love it if we could all get together sometime. For those of you who can make it, this week’s session at the Duck should be a good one - Heather Gilmer & Jeff Moore’ll be in town (or so they tell me) & we’ll be (myself included) over later on that evening for some tunage.

Hi Eilam: I believe that you are referring to Eddy’s wonderful Cooktown Ironwood McGee ~ nice, nice sound ~ but I should let him tell you about it!

talisiga: I play my F flutes very little as I don’t particularly care for that key, but they are nice ones anyway

Ben: I am so glad you like the flute! It’s a good one, no doubt about it! Actually I have been inspired by you to pick up my whistles again on occasion! Particularly my tweaked Shaw ~ I like how it really sings!
I dropped off my son’s horn at H&H this week.
I am resolved to start practicing with my CD’s more. I think that would get me in the groove a little better…

All: I would LOVE to get it together again ~ just say where and when! (My house will be available, no problem) I feel the pain about the Wednesday night thing…

Mary

A couple of us have been getting together every other sunday at a starbucks off 290 at 43rd around 2p. It’s meant to be a slow session.

There was a great Sunday sesssion at the Harp until they kicked us out. We still try to get together at Rudyard’s around 6p but not many folks have been showing up. I haven’t been able to attend much recently due to work and other personal things.

Mary, thanks for the info.

If you listen to Lunasa, there are some nice tunes in F.

Oh, so Rudyard’s is cool with a session then?

I’ve not been there, actually - is it the Rudyard’s on Kipling?

We could record an album and call it, “The Jungle Book Sessions”

K, that’s everyone’s cue to throw tomatoes at me.

Mary: yea, the flute is amazing - when I can really find the sweet spot, it’s like the whole room shakes! You can really feel it under your fingers. If I were going to get a flute, I think I’d get one of these! Amazing!

I find that outside of a good session, playing along with CD’s and listening lots is invaluable to improving my playing. That goes for horn, too - for instance, I’m currently getting ready for some auditions for orchestras, and the best practice and preparation for them I’m getting right now is by listening to/playing along with CDs of all the excerpts asked on the list, within the context of the entire piece!

Ben

It does look sorta reddish, I guess, in the photo, though not as red as the ones in front of it. I’m pretty sure that is my keyless Olwell. There was one other similar flute there, but I’m pretty sure that the Olwell.
