Geantrai TG4: Flute players from Clare + Noel Hill

Hi All,
This week’s Geantrai features flute players like Peadar O’Loughlin, Kevin Crawford, and Gary Shannon. Also includes Noel Hill and Maeve Donnelly.

The O’Loughlin Donnelly duet is especially worth catching IMO.

The set with James Cullinane, Mick Leahy and Kevin Crawford is also great.

Thanks for letting us know. I’m watching it right now, and it’s great. It’s great that they put the programs online for us not in Ireland.

A great flutey feast, Gary Shannon has a hell of a way to hold a flute!

After watching that I can only say, How does he do that?

Ron

I only wish I COULD watch it. It claims not to be able to open the Windows Media Player. Wonder what it’s irked about.

Kevin Krell

Gary Shannonn is a great player, but I wonder if he’ll have neck problems a few years down the road.

Is it my imagination or do a lot of lefted handers play into their shoulders?

Allan

I’ve seen Catherine Mc Evoy doing the same.

I see that Gary plays with a kinda piper’s grip on the top hand with the thumb underneath. Maybe he uses the shoulder to relieve some of the strain that builds up in the thumb?
I’ve had a bit of an injury that has prevented me from travelling into my local session this past couple of months. So whilst I was playing flute with a piper’s grip on both hands - I’ve taken opportunity to try the ‘normal’ grip and it has certainly taken the strain off the thumb. Been a case of ‘going backwards to go forwards’ I think but who knows. The hardest thing I find is the Cnat as I used to half hole this before - much harder to do this for me with ‘normal’ grip, so I’m cross fingering which is less intuitive for me. Those Cnat B Cnat passages, I can’t quite get the sort of slurring effect that I could with the piper’s by just peeling off a finger a touch. But sure, what the hell!

Apparently Gary tells his students not to copy his grip!

I think there might be a gap in the market for a flute holder, after all harmonica playing guitarist have a doodad to free up their hands!

who is the older fellow playing flute with the lady fiddler?

looks like he’s playing a Rudall, though the ring on the foot joint is what’s throwing me.

anyone?

It’s Peadar O’Loughlin, The album with the same two is called “The Thing Itself” One of my favourites.

Nice! I’ll have to find it.

anyone know if Peadar plays a Rudall?

and…
how does anyone download and save these tv4 programs?

or you can buy the programs for 30 euros each from TG4

TG4’s web TV is a really great resource - I do wish the sound quality was a bit better :sulk:

At that price they’d better be dvd quality rather than a tiny window with iffy sound. Do you know what format they sell the programs in?

cheers,
Jeroen

I think it’s regular DVD format mpeg2. Yes, it is expensive for a a 25 minute DVD.

There is footage from the TG4 Ceol.. shows on YouTube which is easy to download onto a iPod video if you have one

It’s great to see Peadar, he’s probably my favorite player. Maeve’s playing is kindof annoyingly over the top for me, though, and as usual, much louder than Peadar. Oh well.

Shannon’s tone is really nice. Thanks for posting the pointer… I don’t always remember to check out what’s been on TG4
