Hi All,
This week’s Geantrai features flute players like Peadar O’Loughlin, Kevin Crawford, and Gary Shannon. Also includes Noel Hill and Maeve Donnelly.
I see that Gary plays with a kinda piper’s grip on the top hand with the thumb underneath. Maybe he uses the shoulder to relieve some of the strain that builds up in the thumb?
I’ve had a bit of an injury that has prevented me from travelling into my local session this past couple of months. So whilst I was playing flute with a piper’s grip on both hands - I’ve taken opportunity to try the ‘normal’ grip and it has certainly taken the strain off the thumb. Been a case of ‘going backwards to go forwards’ I think but who knows. The hardest thing I find is the Cnat as I used to half hole this before - much harder to do this for me with ‘normal’ grip, so I’m cross fingering which is less intuitive for me. Those Cnat B Cnat passages, I can’t quite get the sort of slurring effect that I could with the piper’s by just peeling off a finger a touch. But sure, what the hell!
It’s great to see Peadar, he’s probably my favorite player. Maeve’s playing is kindof annoyingly over the top for me, though, and as usual, much louder than Peadar. Oh well.
Shannon’s tone is really nice. Thanks for posting the pointer… I don’t always remember to check out what’s been on TG4
