Geantraì - Sean Potts

There’s a nice edition of Geantraì featuring Sean Potts on TG4:

Click on Ceol Cartlann on the left menu and scroll down to Geantraì - 28/11/2006

Anyone know who the second piper is?

The second piper is Ned Wall from Co. Wexford (I think).

What slow aire is it that the piper and whistler are playing? Very nice.

Cheers! Richard

Caoineadh a phiobaire (the piper’s lament) which Sean Potts senior wrote for John Potts. It’s followed by Strike the Gay Harp.

Sorry for if the spelling is wrong and if I got Sean’s explanation wrong. My Irish is very rusty.

Sean’s dad wrote it for his dad. Cuimhne an Phiobaire… The Piper Remebered.

Anyone have the notation or ABC for the Piper Remembered tune?

I would love to learn it. Very moving.

Many thanks!

Richard

Yeah, somewhere. I’ll PM it to you.

It should be in your inbox now. Have fun, it is one of my favorite tunes.

Here’s a clip of my doing a messy job of butchering it…

At the same link, go to TG10 is Fearr: Ceol and about 21 minutes in there’s a brief clip of Paddy Keenan playing the Kesh jig with Matt Molloy.

Also, Geantraì on 19/12/2006 is presented by and features Robbie Hannon

I have already posted about some programmes on TG4.

I second that!

Here’s an interesting recipe for this tune.

Tommykleen’s Key-sublime Pie

-Try playing the tune on a C chanter over D drones.

-Shift the tune up so that the starting note is Bb (well, B note on a D chanter).

-Some of the D regs will work on this. Experiment!

-Garnish with a twist of lemon

-Serves 4.

Yeah he’s from a place called Ballycullane about 10 miles from where this programme was shot, in harmonica player John Murphy’s pub (called Colfers) in Carrig-On-Bannow. Ned was taught by Tommy Kearney in Waterford. He plays a nice set of reels with his brother Dermot and their brother-in-law Rory Healy. There’s a great festival held in Carrig each July. http://www.philmurphyweekend.com/

Paddy Keenan, Finbar Furey, Paddy Glackin, Bothy Band, Johnny Keenan etc.:

Ceol na bhFánaithe - 20/09/2006

There’s a great clip with Paddy Keenan playing his old Rowsome chanter with something resembling a UFO on the top of it!!

HELP

What am I doing wrong? I can’t get back any farther than Nov 2006 in the archives. Can anybody tell me how to get to the show with Paddy Keenan?

Thanks in advance, David

Sorry. Go to Cláir Eile - Cartlann instead of Ceol Cartlann

Hi PJ,

Sorry. Go to Cláir Eile - Cartlann instead of Ceol Cartlann

That allowed me to go back farther in the general archive, but the program “Ceol na bhFanaithe” was not there.

David

Joseph,
That is a sweet bit of playing and your pipes are in great tune.

All the best,
Pat Sky

Thanks buddy. Though I confess it took more than a few minutes to figure out what tune you were talking about, and if it really was me you were referring to.

I guess it must have been the Jameson and the Macanudo Portofinos which were the cause of that accidental playing.

Hi All,

I’ve tried to find the “Geantrai” program of 28/11/2006 with Sean Potts and “Ceol na bhFanaithe” of 20/09/2006 that PJ recommended

and also the program with the Vallely Family of 21/11/2006 that Fergmaun recommended

I have not had any luck finding these programs. Does anyone know if the archives just don’t go back this far anymore?

Has anybody been able to view these recently?

Thanks, David
