The Paddy Moloney Show

An all too brief musical biography on Paddy Moloney called “Sé Mo Laoch” on TG4: http://www.tg4.tv/

Select Ceol - Cartlann (Music -Archive) on the left sidebar menu, then look for the show in the centre menu. Requires Real Audio to view.

Thank you for posting that. Sean Keene will always be that 30 something that I saw at UCLA in 1975.

Djm, how do you get the track to play in Real Audio as for some reason it seems to be set to default on WMP? I also have broadband connection but for some reason I cannot access it, anyone in Australia experiencing connection issues?

Cheers L42B

Well, that was fun! Thanks for calling the program to our attention.

Yeah, I’m sure that’s what all the ladies say…

Most enjoyable, actually. I’ve never been a huge fan of the P.M., but I enjoyed hearing his playing in this. I think my favorite bit is when Paddy mentions Sting and Seán Mac Reamonn sputters “Oh yeah, that English fella.”

L42B, I’m not an expert on this stuff, and I don’t know how it is appearing on your screen, but I have RealAudio v 10 on my system, and it is set as the default for most file types. Apple QuickTime and RealAudio are in a constant battle on my system trying to take over for all file types, even ones they can’t play.

On my screen, once I’ve found 'Sé Mo Laoch and press Play, I get a tv window with an Options button at the bottom. Selecting Options brings up a sidebar menu with options to set the bandwidth (250 or 450K), plus four set-ups to choose from, a volume control, and a zoom option for the video. Play with these to get the right combo for your gear.

A nice, pleasant look at Paddy and The Chieftains. I have an unrelated question though, just how popular are McDonalds fast food joints in Eire?

When I lived in Ireland (99-01) I remember hearing there were more McDonalds in Ireland per capita than any other country in the world. Maybe an urban folk tale though.

There’s a short clip of Leo Rowsome making pipes.

Was that taken from a more complete programme and is there any more of it in the RTE archives somewhere?

I believe there is. Don’t know what show though. That elephants tusk was funny too, and the woodbine cigarette in his mouth too!!

I enjoyed that show. I do think Paddy Moloney is a great piper. He deserves a good bit of recognition. Not because of his chieftans work (after number 9 I lost interest) but he is a good solid piper. I really enjoy his chanter work. It is from a different era and not as sanatised as modern players but still very enjoyable.
Lots of Touhey/Delaney moves.
I’d be very happy to be able to play as well as him at his age!! (70ish)

Great show.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe the series from which the clip of Leo Rowsome was taken was called “Hands”- each programme dealt with an aspect of traditional Irish craft.

The series was in B&W so possibly dates from the 1970’s (?). It gets repeated every few years on RTE. I seem to remember one programme about making St. Briget crosses (including harvesting the rushes) and another about making hurleys and sliotars, but I might be mixing these up with another series.

I do remember one of the “Hands” programmes about pipemaking.

I think these clips were also used in one programme in the River of Sound series, presented by Michael O’Suilamhain, the programme which dealt with traditional instruments. They showed Davy Spillane making pipes interspersed with clips of Leo.

I never saw it, but I think there was also a programme on harpmaking, and possibly one on bodhr…

I’ll get me coat.

The pipemaking one in ‘Hands’ was on Eugene Lambe.

That little fragment of Leo Rowsome keeps turning up in all sorts of settings, I wouldn’t think there’s much of it, he notoriously kept strangers out of the place, lest they get away with any trade secrets.
