Micky Dunn, Paddy Keenan TG4

These two are on TG4 archive ‘Ceol Cartlann’ playing pipes in a series about Irish travelling folk called Raggle Taggle Gypsies. Great music and good video of Paddy’s fingering. These programs are priceless to isolated learners like me. Thankfully i find them inspirational and not daunting. If anyone can direct me to the tunnell I will go in search of the light at the end.
Tim

Thank you
a very inspiring program

Yes, a very good show. Thanks for mentioning it.

Some Planxty on Siar an Bóthar - 01/06/2007 right after it for those who like such things.

Thanks for the tip.

I just started watching, and about 5 min in there is a man and a boy playing. The man appears to be playing a metal chanter.

Can anyone tell me something about this chanter or metal chanters in general?

Cheers, David

That´s Felix Doran and his son Michael Doran. Felix would be playing the Leo Rowsome metal chanter I assume. I wonder if Leo made this chanter himself or if he just put keys and a windcap on it? This would the chanter that was damaged on the way to Felix´s funeral in 1972. Kevin Henry has a “Taylor style” double chanter. They are not so usual as far as I know.

Hi Steampacket,

Thanks for the info. I did a search for “metal chanter” and found the other thread on the Doran silver set, which funny enough was just last month, with the link to some of the story on the set.

I haven’t come across a picture of the silver chanter yet.

thank you Steampacket
I knew about Felix
what happened with Michael?
are there recordings of him

“I knew about Felix what happened with Michael? are there recordings of him” Carel.

Sorry for the delay Carel - I meant to reply but forgot. There are no commercial recordings of Michael Doran playing the pipes, but I believe there are some recordings of Michael, and other pipers playing from one of the Johnny Doran Tionals, either the second or third tional. Denis Quigley would know more about this. Michael’s son Mikey (12 years old at the time of recording) can be heard piping at:
