Davy Stephenson chanter (mp3)

Hi everyone,

I play U-Pipe for 5 months, but last week I broke my reeds :frowning: (I’m so stupid!) … now I’m really sad, because I have to wait before I can play U-Pipe again…
Tow months ago, I recorded with a friend (Peter) a song…
So if you are interested to listen a sample of this song go to:
http://membres.lycos.fr/boystewmen/son/UilleannCall.mp3

My U-pipe was made by Davy Stephenson (it’s an Holly chanter)… I love it! (I like the warm tone)

Be indulgent please with this “sample” ('cause i’m a beginner) and excuse my poor english

thx,

Loïc

PS: I’ll post (when I get my reeds) a new sample (a fast Jig or a fast reel )

PS2: yes, I know the tempo of this sample is not regular…

You’re doing extremely well after only 5 months practice…superb stuff

I hope you get another reed sorted out soon, and I look forward to hearing more recordings of your playing.

Steve

I think thats really good, I’d be very happy if I could play as well after 3 months

Cheers, Mac

Well played!I really enjoyed that-you will have to post on the Tinwhistle tunes Uillean pipe page  I’m no piper, but that chanter sounds beautiful to my ear.Thank you for sharing that with us.

Xeluis, your sample was excellent. Very sweet sounding chanter!

Do you have any pictures of the holly chanter?

Thank you very much guys, It’s the first time that another U-Pipers listen my stuff; so it’s important for me (I’m isolated & I learn U-P only by listening CD & MP3)…
It’s an old record, so it’s not perfect…
I have great respect for people of this forum… I have no teachers to teach me the U-P, so this forum helps me a lot !
Kevin, I hope one day I’ll post tunes to clip&snip website… (but I have to progress first )

Tony, you can see my chanter here: http://www.bagpipeworks.com/chanters_2.htm (the last one)

thx,

Loïc

Well, I’ve been playing for a litle over a year now and I’m jealous.

Jeff

Beautiful tune. Sounds a little like the Lily of the West. With such a gentle touch on the instrument you will do well. Beginers (myself included) tend to put their eagerness before their skill and go to fast. Not the case.

Do you have the ABC for that tune?

Keep it up. Sounds great!

Virgil

Wow! nice work, i’m jealous. Your chanter is sweet, I like the look.

What was your recording set up?

Only 5 months? That was really great. Thanks for sharing it.

-Paul

“The Lakes of Pontchartrain” is one name for that tune.

See…that just goes to show you how good a beginner can sound if he has the right chanter and reed combination. I’d have to agree that not only is the playing style good already, but Davey Stephenson has outdone himself in Hollywood…that DOES have a sweet sound! Alright Davy…better check your email again!

What was your recording set up?

I used a good microphone (seinheiser E865) to get a perfect (and real) sound + a classical “mixer table” + my Computer.
mix set up: I think I didn’t change the low/middle/high settings (I don’t remember)
I only used a basic reverb with “Cubase” software

The Sennheiser E865 is a moderately expensive live performance condeser mic and Cubase is a high-end recording software product. You say you have been playing Uilleann pipes only 5 months but I think there is more to this picture.

Xeluis, do you play another instrument?

Yes Tony, i play accordion for 15 years, and whistles for 3 years (I think, whistles technique helped me a lot to progress in U-piping)

It did.
Your playing is beautiful.
Much success with your Stephenson chanter.

Hello Folks, just joined up someone said there"s more to this picture, I have a half set of Davy stephensons pipes, Xeluis what country did you say you come from? That chanter sounds to me more like a blackwood chanter but I would not argue about it, of course being of the Peter Hunters 14.50inch concert “D” chanter design you can here the resemblance of Sean Potts chanter, when playing with The Donal Lunny Band, Davy Stephenson sure was lucky when he got the designs off the Master Peter Hunter.

Hey Guys,
I have found “The Lakes of Pontchartrain” in ABC format and the printed notation, but the 2 vers. i found are in the key of “A” and “C”. My question, can either of these be palyed on the pipes?

Thanks
Mike

P.S. Xeluis, keep at it and post more clips when you can!!!

You’ll find it best to play this tune in the key of G on the uilleann pipes. It should be fairly simple to transpose, even by hand.

Wow, great playing there, Xeluis!

“The Lakes of Ponchatrain” is one of my favorite songs.

Well done!

If someone finds or figures out the abc or music notation please send it along…I can figure out a good part of it by ear but I am relegated to a laptop speaker and can’t hear all of the notes…thanks…it is played in the key of G in this thread..Yes??? Sound great for 5 months…you can tell when someone was meant to play the pipes…my only regret is not having them at a younger age.
