I hope its not bad form to mention this here, but I have recently recorded a few piping tunes and have put them on the web, in MP3 format, at the following URL:
Steve,
The tunes on your website are awesome. Style & technique most pleasing. This weekend I listened to:
Sean Reids Favourite - Jimmy O’Brien-Moran
The Ancient Voice of Ireland - Mick O’Brien
Kieran O’Hare - Kieran O’Hare
The tunes on your website were every bit as professional as those. Thanks for the link and keep up the great work!
Wow…thanks Tony!!! I’m really happy that you like the tunes, and I cannot thank you enough for your kind reply. I think more recordings will follow at some stage.
Thanks for your comments Jeff. Statia Donnelly’s is certainly one of my favourite tunes and I fell in love with it when I heard it being played by Mick O’Brien.
Very nice recordings. You did a decent job of miking, and your playing is nice as well. Just one question. Was “learnt” a purposeful affectation of “learned?”
“Learnt” - it’s funny how we use different versions of these words - I’m Canadian and that would be a perfectly acceptable version of learned - same as dreamt, leapt and wept. Sometimes I think it odd to read some literature (many times American) and not see those affectations used. All a matter of familiarity I suppose.
Cheers,
Paul
Canadian? You mean north-north-american? Kidding. I agree. I’ve seen dreamt and learnt in candian literature often. It’s always nice to see other versions of ‘english.’
Ooops…sorry to everyone who posted replies to this thread that I didn’t respond to sooner…I took my eyes off the ball for a while. So, thanks again to Ken, Dionys and Kevin for positive feedback and comments.
Kevin..thanks for your comments too My pipes are a concert pitch full set made by Alain Froment. I only received the pipes from Alain last summer and the regs are something that I am still coming to terms with. At first, concentrating on pressing the regs resulted in a ‘crash and burn’ situation with regards to the tune but, of course, lots of practice has resulted in progress.
I do realise that my reg playing is a little on the abrupt side, but this is due to limited current ability on the regs rather than stylistic preferences. I am delighted to say that I have recently improved a bit more with one particular tune, and am able to hold down chords on the regs for a much more extended period of time
Next time I get to sit down with a really good piper at a workshop, I’m hoping to get a few more tips on reg playing though…I love the regulators and to play them really well is a dream and an ambition :==)
Hey Steve…I’ve heard a few of your recordings on Snips and Clips, but what happened to the URL above, I now get this default: http://www.btopenworld.com/default
My apologies about not being able to find my recordings. Due to moving to the South-West of the UK, I switched ISPs and forgot that my tunes were still on the old ISP account.
Anyway, I’ve put things right now and if you go to the SWAUP website (www.swaup.org) and scroll down to the new section entitled ‘MP3 Recordings’ you will find a collection of about 9 or so tunes that I recorded.
They are all in MP3 format, but will still take a while to download, especially on slower connections.
Hi Steve,
thanks again for posting the tunes, I like the ones you have on Clips & Snips, nice to hear the others. I really like your style and you get a great sound.
