Davy Stephenson chanter (mp3)

Xelius, over here that tune is known as “The Lilly of the West” it is a love ballad, unrequited and lost of course,Lilly being a bit of a flirt, the fella has a duel with his rival and sticks his rapier in him(as you do) he then goes off on his travels ,Scottish Irish Origin.
Sting sings a beautiful version of it on the Chieftains Black Velvet

JC’s tune finders has a simalar tune called "flora, the lilly of the west. one of the first tunes i learned on guitar as a lad. peter, paul and mary did a nice pickin’ and vocal on it.there are some differences.

Liam,
It’s actually Mark Knopfler(Dire Straits) singing Lilly of the West on the Long Black Veil Album, great tune. That melody, or its variants, is used for many Appalachian folk songs. Its one of those great constantly recycled tunes. Dylan recorded Lilly of the West on an old album just called Bob Dylan, I think, its got some funny tunes(Can’t Help Falling in Love) and a nice version of The Ballad of Ira Hayes.
Take it easy,
Patrick

Thanks Patrick got my artistes and album title all mixed up.
