I’m somewhat relutant to write another Sindt review. They always seem to turn into a half hole discussion. But I think that misses the point of a Sindt Whistle so I feel I need to put my 2 cents in the mix.
I received my whistles about a month ago. I figured if I had to wait 8 months I might as well order a bunch, so I got a Eb, D, C, Bb and A. They’re worth the wait. Ann Sindt told me that John worked about 3 years to get these whistles designed the way he wanted. His goal was to make a reasonably priced, consistent whistle that performs like a good Generation. I think he hit the mark and then some. I own a Burke Pro Session D, a Water Weasel D, a O’Briain Improved D, an Oak D and some Generations along with my Sindt’s. The Sindt’s are the best in my opinion. These whistles ring or pop. They’re very quick and clean ( I’m using clean instead of pure, the Burke is pure.) The D is better than my O’Briain and louder than it too. I like the C the best of the bunch because of the size. The Eb, D and C have a similar response character, while the Bb and A are alike. The Bb an A ring but have a breathy overtone that is characteristic of the deeper whistles.
The mouthpiece is comfortable. I like the plastic in my mouth, like a Generation. The tube is scribed with a line for the “in tune” registration, you push the tube in the mouthpiece as far as the line and the whistle is in tune. It’s all pretty simple.
All in all I’m sold. I’m keeping these babies. I’d say if you want a whistle that is good or better than a great Generation get on the waiting list, these whistles are consistent where the Generation is not. Mary Bergin is “spot on” in my opinion. There’s lots of good whistles out there and these Sindt’s are part of the bunch.
