YARP

Yes folks, Yet Another Raffle Prize posting.

This time the Dixon Low D from the extremely nice and friendly Mr. Wetyer from bigwhistle.co.uk.

I obviously have Little or No Idea when it comes to low whistles, since this one is the very first ever, but it sure is a nifty three-piece construction, and it sounds – when I have the air column under control, and my fingers actually cover all the holes (ouch) – really really nice.

One thing I had never expected is that half-holing on this whistle is orders of magnitude easier than on my soprano whistles. Stands to reason I guess, since the holes are so much larger, but it sure is nice to be able to get really convincing low Fs out rather than the muffled variety I have been able to previously conjure up.

Well, I’m off to do some more low stuff, a million thanks once more to Jessie and to Phil for donating the prize!

That’s what i got too (i got the Whistle Shop gift certificate, and exchanged it for Dixon low D and low F). I would also describe these whistles as nice and easy. Very much in tune, pleasant to play. The only complaint for me is that the bell note is weak.

Some recent post got me considering a Dixon Low D so I went to Tony’s website. Dale seems to be pretty pleased with them if you look at the Low Whistle makers section. Then I saw that Tony makes a Low D/flute combo - you can just switch the head joints. This intrigued me since I’m also toying with the idea of getting an Irish flute.
Has anyone bought one of these combos and can you give your opinion?

The flute/whistle combos usually get mixed reviews. I would do a little research on the board before committing to that product.
