Well…I know I said I wouldnt get another whistle. But…Yesterday, Kari came home and wanted the computer, She logged in and went to Dave Migoya’s site (Fyfer Restorations)
On that sight they had a gorgeous Low D from T&G, Not only did it look nice, but the sound was …well…You had to hear it to believe it. After talking to Dave we found out that the whistle had been SOLD the day before. Now..To be honest, I did entertain thoughts of Kidnapping the persons dog and holding it for ransom, Various schemes of Blackmail went through my head, But..Then I grew up.
This morning we went and ordered a Dixon Low D (What a suprise heh), After talking to Thom he told me that he’s fresh out of Tunable Low D’s…No sweat, I switched the order to a Non-Tunable (Why not ?..I’ll not be playing in a session in the foreseeable future).
Sigh…I still dont think I have WHOA though
Well…maybe a slight case.
Dan
I’ve found the absence of tunability little problem in sessions, cause typically other musicians are in tune, have electronic tuners, and/or tune to me. Congrats. Jim
A while ago, I sent a copy of the picture to George from T&G Irish Whistles with a few questions. He told me that the whistle was in fact made in Prince George (I lived near there for a while…), played very nice, and that subsequent whistles such as his present ones have been improved since then. He sent me one of his new ones to try out. I received it today.
I went out for lunch at the pub. On the way there, I got his package in the mail. I opened it and played a few tunes on it while waiting for our soup.
And My! Does it ever have a nice sound! The low D note is fabulous. I love the sound (strong, very mellow, just enough chiff). It feels and looks great. I am certain that I will decide to keep it.
By the way - Customs Canada charged me $5.97 tax and $5.00 to calculate it. I had to laugh. They wrote on the package that it was a wind gauge/anemometer (both in English and French). I laughed harder.
My lunch friend thought an anemometer was some sort of a special thermometer that one would put in one’s … huh … well … you get the point. Some sort of ‘Kids in the Hall’ skit… for you Canadians. On and all, a very happy and musical lunch hour.
Actually, I showed it to a co-worker once back at the office, and played a few notes. It drew a bit if a crowd…
If you liked the sound, the posted price on the whistle you liked is not so much cheaper than if you ordered one direct form George. And, I tell you, it would be worth it.
Dan,
Thom’s gonna think there’s a run on Dixon low D non-tunables. I ordered one last night. Nope, no WhOA here either. Now if we can get him to stock the low F, the low C and convince Tony to make a low E (I’m a guitarist - we love that key). I noticed nobody has posted a clip of a Dixon low D yet on Clips and Snips.
Dan & Scott
Congrats on your purchase of a Dixon Low D!
I got one from Thom in December and I’m really happy with it.
(Given all of what I heard about the Dixon Soprano D, My Dixon Low D may get some company!)
Again, a fine choice. Mine is a nontunable and I’ve had no problems with my infrequent pairings with other musicians to date.
Play away!
