Last night my new Dixon arrived from The Whistle Shop - the new D with the brass telescoping tuning joint. WOW!!!
The whistle looks classy for an inexpensive whistle, and is light as a feather. Ah, but the tone is so pure and sweet it melts your heart! The best way I can describe it is - it SINGS! And somehow, it has some magical quality and response that makes me PLAY better! It’s a quiet whistle with no chiff, so I’d say it’s more suited to solo playing… but with that beautiful sound, who cares?
Alas, though it is now my favorite whistle, it has not cured my WHOA. I haven’t had it for 24 hours yet, but I’m already starting to think that maybe I NEED to check out the Dixons in other Keys…
Funny, my Dixon tunable low D arrived last night also. This is my first low whistle, and I have to say that I am amazed with the way it plays and sounds. If Dixon high whistles are anything like their lows, they are worth more than the price paid.

I have a Dixon tunable low-G that is GREAT! I may have to spring for the low and high D’s and the A. I feel WhOA coming on! Do you think I should go for the switchable heads?
Good thing you all are getting the tunable whistles. I bought a non-tunable low D Dixon, and it was sharp, and the notes became sharper up the scale. In fact the B note was a quarter step sharp. I had to return it. My first and only experience with Dixons kind of soured me on them. Wasn’t such a good deal for me, since I paid shipping both ways to find out it was a bad whistle.
Just wondering how Dixon low D’s are in comparison to Cheiftain low D???
Gemm, I have a Dixon Low D and a Chieftan Low E. The difference reminds me of driving a economy car vs. a driving a tank. The Dixon is fairly quite, smooth and very responsive, yet lacks power. The Chieftan has alot of power, but is a bit more slugish in handling. The Chieftan requires more air, but once it is warmed up the tonal quality is very rich. The Dixon requires less air, hits the high notes easier with the tone being somewhat “thinner” than the Chieftan. My fingers can go quite a bit faster on my Dixon Low D than they can go on the Chieftan Low E.
All in all, I love both whistles…it just depends on what kind of mood I’m in.

Good! Thank you so much, that’s what I needed to know. I really appreciate it when someone can tell me the difference between things–I don’t have that many whistles. I think I’ll get the Dixon because I want to get the flute duo, plus I like smoother sound usually. Thanks again!
