Does this book actually exist?! I reckon it would be easier to get your hands on a 1st edition Gutenberg Bible than a copy of this rare tome.
So does anyone know where i might procure a copy? I believe it’s been out of print for a few years now, but there must be copies of it floating around somewhere. I would just like it for reference, really, and i imagine it would be an insightful read.
I just bought a copy last week. It was advertised on the Dunsire forum (highland pipes). It’s informative reading, but I don’t think some of the measurements are detailed enough (chanter in particular) to actually build a set of pipes.
I think a LOT of debate has revolved around this book and whether or not one can reasonably build an instrument by using it.
Avoiding all the specifics and deep opinions I would state that this is a very good “primer”. It’s a good place to start and an excellent resource. For one skilled and knowledgeable, intuitive and willing to learn by trial and error the book can be a good general blueprint.
I didn’t mean to be critical of it. It is a nice resource with very good drawings, done to scale. A lot of work must have gone into it. The writing style is also very engaging. It also does not portend to be the definitive source.
I bought mine way back in 1978; The price sticker on the back is 3.95 pounds. I thought I was going to try to make my own set. I found out that at a local wood working class, I was VERY allergic to the wood shavings. Oh well.
I think you would get far more useful documentation from the Sean Reid Society CD ROMS available fom NPU. If you want a copy of the Garvin book in pristine condition simply for collecting purposes, and have access to unlimited funds, I may be able to accommodate you.
