Does this book have a lot of useful information for the new pipemaker

Everything is releative. There’s some interesting information in it. Some say its wonderful, some say its too general. The book is available from NPU http://www.pipers.ie/shop/detail.lasso?SKU=056. The last time this came up on eBay it went for more than buying the book new from NPU. Go figure.

That’s because the seller was trying to pull a fast one, djm. The book was available for sale, but no credit was being given to Mr. Garvin - the seller was trying to make it appear as though HE had written the book.

At least this time Mr. Garvin is getting credit for being the author of the book.

I have had very quick response time from NPU. Anything I have gotten through ebay has been slow. Slowest, is anything coming from Canada. The postal system sits on everything for a month plus.

I would prefer to support NPU anyway.

Mail times depend on how you ask the sender to ship it. I always email NPU separately and tell them to ship via SwiftPost. This is the Irish equivalent to US Post’s Global Priority. If you leave it up to NPU, they will ship via surface mail - the cheapest method possible - which means your shipment waits for the next steamship that sets sail and you will literally wait months to get it.

I have never had a shipment from any source in Ireland take more than a week to arrive using this method. Similar with US to Canada - I just ask them to send it via Global Priority. You gets what you pay for.

I think you would find it worth the money (it was 6 pounds when I got mine way back). The diagrams are nice, with plenty of measurements. Overall the pipe plans are a bit idealized, rather than taken from a specific set (at least one isn’t referenced), so I’m not sure how useful they would be in practice. Also there is no real info on tuning other than reed modifications. ( For this Geoff Wooff’s article is Ceol na hEireann No 2 is a step in the right direction. )

The Ginsberg plans (which come in large rolled format) are also detailed, but are taken from specific instruments. Again I don’t think any directions on tuning and voicing of the chanter are given. It’s been awhile since I’ve looked at them.

yea, I have Ginsbergs Plans, I dont really use them, I prefer Brittons Plans..

I didn’t realize that Tim sold plans for making pipes. What do they consist of?
