What's the titles of these two reels?

The Earl’s Chair
Come West Along the Road

Woa, thanks!!!

The Snowy Mountain, and
The Snowy Mountain.

In case you’re all wondering what this is about… The board software evidently allows us to delete topics we have posted even after there are replies. What database wallahs would no doubt call a referential integrity problem. (Hope you can’t delete parent records that have children in your Delphi apps, Azalin.)

So now on the topic list Azalin is listed as the poster and in the topic it looks as though I named two reels à propos of nothing. In fact he posted two sound clips on the basis of which I was able to identify the mystery tunes with a 3% margin of error 19 times out of 20.

So, Azalin, whassup? Are you feeling modest about your playing? Nobody else does around here!

Thanks, StevieJ, I was feeling very confused and wondering if I had lost my mind–or wondering if you were a mind reader for Azalin–or what was going on!!

So did he take his clips down, then?

Ehhh Stevie!

Thanks again for the titles… By the way I don’t think you can talk of referential integrity with the first post of a thread, because the “parent” entity is actually the thread itself, which is kinda an abstract object, and all posts related to it, including the first one I deleted, are all child entities…

Hmmm, yeah I’ve put my post down, I don’t want to look as if I were trying to subtily make my stuff available, I badly want titles for the tunes I’m learning 'cause I’m building up a list and want to be able to pick up from it… But okay, here are the tunes for the curious (and from memory, hope the link works!).

By the way Bloomfield,

The Snowy Mountain is a slip jig right? .. or is it Snow Path? You better play it!

Snowy Path. Written by Mark Kelly, on Altan’s Harvest Storm. I guess it’s 9/3, and technically a slip jig but I don’t think of it as such, because it feels very different from session slip jigs I know. Nice tune, though.

The Snowy Mountain thing is actually a joke from an anecdote I heard somewhere (Ciaran Carson’s Last Night’s Fun, perhaps?). Young player sits next to old remote-area fiddler and eagerly listens to the wonderful tunes the old guy plays. “What was that?” young guy asks. “The Snowy Mountain.” Oh, all right. Old guys another tune. “And what was that?” “That was the Snowy Mountain” etc. etc.

I think the story is meant to tell you something about the relative importance of tune names and about the danger of missing the essence of what is handed you by Those Who Know. My paraphrase, I guess.

The Snowy Mountain story kinda undoes the old joke:

How can you tell one Irish tune from another?

They have different names.
