what whistle is it? (from Braveheart sample)

I was listening to mp3 samples on the www.tonyhinnigan.com site and was going download some but they would not take pay pal. I enjoy the whistle on the Braveheart sample and do not know what it is. Is it a whistle, pan pipe or is it enhanced electronically? If it is a whistle which one is it?

It doesn’t sound like a whistle to me. Sounds more like a flute or pan pipes as you suggest. Certainly it has been processed electronicly, so maybe it was whistle initially?

It’s a quena.

–James

It sounds like the pan pipes he plays in movie #9 on his “Whistles” page.

SOunds like Pan Pipes to me, maybe a Quena.

My first educated guess was panpipes, too.

I believe he states it’s a quena in the notes by the sample, where he also discussed why he chose to use vibrato.

–James

Which notes are those, i don’t see any notes by the sample.

On his site, click on “movies,” then on “Braveheart.”

If you’re having trouble with your browser displaying it, here are the notes:

Braveheart

This was done in Abbey Road, London with the LSO and is the first time I used throat vibrato on a film score. Up till then I’d always played straight but before we started I was practising on my own in the studio when James Horner came rushing in. The conversation went something like this:- JH “What’s that?” Me “Erm, it’s a quena James.” JH “Yes but that sound. How do you get that sound?” Me “Erm, throat vibrato. It’s how you’re supposed to play 'em.” JH “I’ve been looking for that sound for years and didn’t know what it was. I thought it was a different instrument. Keep it in!” Being afflicted with terminal Scottishness, I came over all misty-eyed at the Battle of Bannockburn.

–James

Thank you James and all. Looks like that is what it is. I should have read more. But that is what is great about Chiff and Fipple. Someone always there to help. So now there is a quena on my list Santa.

Thanks for clearing that up James. I was looking on the downloads page.

As I played it, I can confirm that the instrument playing the theme in the sample clip was a set of Romanian panpipes and, no, they weren’t electronically enhanced (appart from a bit of reverb).

Tony Hinnigan,

aka Chief Wanganui.

I was right then. Thanks Chief!

Thank you very much Tony. I do apologize. Please do not take offense in my question about the enhancement. I should have known to ask about reverb. Your playing is fantasic.
