Before I get attacked, my wife is Scottish…I enjoy telling her often, that the theme to her favorite movie is played with an Irish bagpipe. Just curious, can that theme be played on an unkeyed chanter? I’m a newbie, so I probably shouldn’t even attempt this yet.
Also, in the H.J. Clarke tutor, they start you on an A. Is there a reason for this? My bottom D, back D, and F# are all much cleaner than I can get the A to be. Is it a reed thing, a chanter thing, or (most likely) a crappy piper thing? Thanks, and happy new year all…[/i]
Wait a minute, are you talking about “Braveheart”, the movie with Mel Gibson about William Wallace? I think that all the piping in that film is that of the uilleann pipes. Wow, great stuff.
yep, and the uillleann pipes being used are just one massive historical error. It is sad when people let Hollywood define their histiry, but the Scots seem to with this crock of shite.
There is even a massive statue of Mel Gibson in full braveheart kit in Scotland with the legend ‘freedom!’ scribed underneath. It really is the pits, bit like the film.
Yes, the theme of the movie can be played on an unkeyed chanter. How are you at getting to the second octave yet? If you can, it’s a pretty simple tune to figure out by ear. Also, I remember seeing the “Making of Braveheart” where Mel Gibson stated that to him the Highland Pipes sounded like cats fighting (Hey, I play GHB too!) which is why he purposely used the uilleann pipes. Anyway, 100% of the movie is not uilleann pipes, there is a little GHB in some of the fighting scenes.
You guys are making me curious about all this… I saw the movie when it came out at the movies, and really can’t remember the soundtrack. Guess I’ll have to rent the DVD and watch it again.
I guess this theme is some sort of John Williamseque mood music, not a veritable ITM piece (air?)? Doesnt sound like one.
Wow, Mel really said that about the GHB?:o Amazing that they’d like him so much in Scotland after that!!! I’ve heard that he’s quite the Kingfish there. (but, Busker Sean, I understand how folks down in England may have a different view of him )
