I am, like so many out there, new to the beauty and surrealism that is the tinwhistle. Unlike those other brave souls, I am terrified of playing in front of others, (especially so early), so I was wondering if there are other Memphians in our midst that would be so brave as to come shed their disguise. I would like to know where I can hear tinwhistles played in our musically-inclined community, and also tips for pacing my learning the tinwhistle. I am taking the lessons on http://www.whistletutor.com, (excellent site), but I would also like to know if there are instructors in my area. Thanks all.

I do happen to know you can play blues on the whistle. The next time you hear a blues guitarist take off on a 12-bar boogie pattern in the key of E, pull out your D whistle and play a blues scale over it (EGA[Bb]BD). In addition, you can bend ALL the notes. You will be pleasantly surprised! (BTW, I’m also a guitarist.)
P.S. - the Mark Cohn song which is the title of this thread would be a GREAT one to practice, since it has a relatively small range of notes and few big jumps.
