I’m going to be teaching myself to play the tinwhistle. I won a Walton’s Guinness Black Tinwhistle (Key D) thru ebay. I was wondering if any of y’all have any tips or words of caution, advice, etc. regarding this particular whistle, as well as pitfalls new beginners ought to avoid? Um, I think “new beginners” sounds redundant. Oh well!
Hey, if I can learn, anybody can! (How WELL I play is another story…) But first, was there any sort of instructions that came with the whistle besides that flimsy paper with 2 scales and row row row your boat on it? If not, theres a great website to check out,www.rogermillington.com ; look at Brother Steves tin-whistle pages; has clips so you can tell if you’re playing right. Theres a lot of info on the web for beginners; but if you can find an instructor, no doubt that would be best. I don’t know of anyone in my area who gives lessons, so at this time I’m strictly working off the internet. Best of luck!
I’m waiting on aforesaid whistle, but I understand it comes with instructions in six languages (I can learn to play in French, if I wanted) and 27 tunes (or some such thing)
Thanks for the website! If I was living back home, in Western NC, finding a teacher wouldn’t be a problem…but this is Wichita.
Josh
Hello Josh,
If you weren’t in Wichita, I’d suggest we get together and make horrendous music together. I am also impatiently waiting for my first whistle to arrive.
I sstrongly recommend a combo book/CD ( or cassette) tutor such as Bill Ochs’ “The Clarke Tinwhistle” ( works with any brand of D whistle). Starts you off at the very beginning of reading music, and carries you up through playing fully ornamented tunes.
