OK, a lot of you probably already know about this, but for the benefit of the new newbies like me who only recently found C&F, I just found this way cool site called Virtual Session…
It has a ton of three tune sets on streaming audio with sheet music for each set as they cycle through each tune. OK, the sets are played at a fairly slow pace (much slower than the average session, I think) but this is good, because a newbie can play along and keep up fairly well.
For those of us who havent yet played during a session, or for those who are starting out and cant find a session in their town, this is a nice oppty to give it a spin in the sheltered privacy of your own home. I also like it because unlike practicing totally on your own,it gives us unsessioned newbies practice in recovering from mistakes and keeping up with the tune when you flub a note. There were afew tunes in here I thought I knew pretty well, but it was a humbling, educational and exciting new experience playing along with the streaming audio.
This might also a good n private way to try out a new ornamentation concept you may be working on.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but Im hoping that a few whistle newbies might discover this site and find it helpful
Thanks for the post!! I’ve been to this site several times before and have never been able to get it to work properly, so I gave up. Your post convinced me to try again and wow am I glad I did!! (I get the gnawing feeling that my wife is going to really hate this!)
In general, I like using Netscape Navigator for most stuff on the internet, but for some reason, I seem to have problems quite often with Virtual Session if I use Navigator.
I don’t think that I’ve ever had a problem when I switch over to Internet Explorer before I go there.
Thom, give into the dark side. Bill Gates is our father. Search your feelings, you know this to be true.
Make sure that you let Netscape know that you are a user. They like to keep their userbase documented…I think you would be Netscape user #212. Of course I’m joking…last time I checked Netscape had almost 10% of the market share!
I apologize…I just needed to vent my frustration as a web developer.

I tried to go to the site, but it kept timing out on me. Perhaps I’ll have to try again a bit later. It’s probably just as well though; it’s too early for me to practice without waking someone up anyway.
That depends on how you package the Fipple Shields. If they come purched atop a hollowed out pineapple filled with some tropical rum concoction?..then I think that you’d have a lifetime supply of web pages!
Alas, today I can no longer get into the virtual session without encountering errors on the page. I suspect that the problems may be due to traffic issues. I tried succesfully last night at about 9:00pm Pacific time…which would be about 5:00am in the UK?
It’s too bad that they don’t offer the virtual session as a stand alone software package available either for download or purchase.
Funny, I just logged on to the site no problem. Im using Internet Explorer…were you using that too?
Of course, it could be the crush of traffic due to the wave of Chiffboarders now trying to log on to the site. Just a sample of the true power of the Chiffboard! Feel the Force!
Kev:
Yes, power indeed…the Chiffboard has grown to become one of the most influential special interest groups in society today. Spurring social reform and lobbying the governments of the world to protect and enhance the rights of the international whistle community. Not to mention some pretty outstanding charity fundraising as well! Being a member of this board makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger than…
Okay, I still can’t get in using IE 6, however, I just tried Netscape 6.2 and it works. Last night it was the other way around. Time to put the kids down for a nap and pull out the Hoover narrow bore!
Dang I feel stupid about this site. I can only get nine tunes in three sets. How do I get to the “tons of tunes” at the site?. Please describe the map to get to more than Rose in the Heather etc etc. Thanks!
OK, here’s what you do…the nine tunes are on the box on the right, but to the left of that is a green box with a graphic of a bass and a melodion/accordeon that reads “Welcome to the Virtual Session”
Click on that box and it will take you to the Session Menu. You will then be able to select from, uh, I thin about three pages of three tune sets. Clicking on one of the sets pulls up the sheet music and the start button. You can click the progressbar to start the tune over again if you want.
Very cool site. You know, its funny but with this site three total whistle newbies in different locations could learn tunes, and if they met somewhere they would be able to have a little session no problem. Way cool.
I went to the site, even though I didn’t think I could play anything on it. I found a little tune called “The Rakes of Mallow” and found I could play some of it! I listen to it and then try to learn it at this point…eventually it would be nice to play along with!
Thank you so much. It really helps to know what the tune is supposed to sound like!
Is that Elvish in your signature? I get that lumenn is probably a word meaning “light” but waht is “ometielvo”. In a prior life I was very good at writing in Faenorian Tengwar, but that was long ago… Too bad someone hasnt come up with a Tengwar font for Windows.
Yes, it’s elvish, but I messed it up. I was going from memory. It’s supposed to be “Elen sila lumenn omentilmo.” A star shines on the hour of our meeting. Frodo says it to Gildor as he is leaving the Shire. Gildor luckily just happened by at the right moment…a Black Rider was approaching Frodo and Gildor scared him off!
There is a site that will translate any text into Tengwar for you…I’m looking for it. I’ll send it Private Message.
