“We all love Lunasa” is a broad and sweeping generalization, and by nature a fallacy. I don’t recall even having heard Lunasa, so how could I love them?
Because Walden. You just do. It’s a given. ![]()

Well, since you say so, NRG.
Looks like I’ll get the chance to find out. I’m getting a Lunasa CD in the mail pretty soon from Shannaquay.
Make statements like that at yer peril…we are all so agreeable on Forum.
Course, we all LOVE Altan too right!?!?
Ha… But in reality, I keep finding that Altan’s versions of various tunes really stay with me. I may choose to play them slightly less forcefully but they are very artistic, memorable and unique in their renderings. After “The Sunset” was mentioned, I worked it up with their chords and their deviant B section (they modulate away for two measures then return to B section as “written” in abc) which is really cool.. And their roll on Tommy People’s (the fast version of Jenny Nettles) is a perfect example to show someone what a roll is supposed to sound like in its most direct fashion.
I doubt there is a single player who everyone on the Forum agrees on “loving.”
Maybe Miko Russell???
Redwolf, there’s an awful lot between trad and Enya-new-agey-type stuff. Steeleye Span for a long time did entirely traditional music on untraditional instruments, while Silly Wizard did mostly music they’d written, but sounded more traditional than Steeleye. No matter how far into the trad sound I get, I still keep going back to Steeleye, who got me into the whole traditional music thing.
Lunasa also falls somewhere between the extremes. I actually saw them several years ago and didn’t like the sound. Something about the bass and the way the fiddle was amped and/or mixed (no highs). But, since I’ve gotten more into the whistle and flute, I really love them. If you can listen to them and not immediately want a Grinter low-F (and a Grinter flute for that matter), you’ve got a lot more willpower than I. ![]()

This is heresy, but I’m not very fond of Micho Russell…I’ve heard that he was someone you had to hear live to appreciate. I dunno, maybe. I don’t like his choices for breathing spots, they really stick out, and make the silence a feature of his playing, which to me just doesn’t fit. All well, it’s only my personal preference, so it doesn’t really matter…
Michael Jackson?

I’ll let you know if I concur after March 16.

Listen to old-style concertina playing from his region and the breathing, pauses and phrasing quite generally will make a lot of sense.

Oh, I know. I love Steeleye too, as well as Fairport Convention
.
I’m afraid I get a bit jaded because I have too many people tell me “you’ll love this…it’s Celtic!” and then find myself subjected to more whispy vocals with a heavy dose of neo-pagan theology, when what I like is a good, driving or lilting sound and (if they be present) voices that don’t sound like they’ve been at the helium. There’s a lot that falls between the two extremes that I like rather a lot ![]()

You’d probably like both Lunasa and Danu then. Danu have a wonderful singer. Not quite Sandy Denny; but definitely not Enya either. Just as well on both counts since he’s male ![]()

Oh, it’s makes plenty of sense. I just don’t like it.
Y’know, Energy, I think I may have heard Lunasa. I think you posted a link to an MP3, or some such, that I listened at.
