While mowing the lawn yesterday and letting my mind wander, it invented a fun little word game to play with itself.
The object is to continue a list of names of musical acts (bands, singers, orchestras or other entities), with some justifiable link from one to the next. If the link between the two is not obvious or justifiable (clever stream-of-consciousness links are acceptable and encouraged), then you’re out. The judge’s (my) ruling is final as to whether you have sufficiently and/or cleverly justified your link. If it’s not obvious, please rationalize your answer.
This game would best be played with a circle of guests at a cocktail party, and speed is key. A failure would require the loser to drink.
Here is an example:
I’ll seed with “The Police”.
The Police
Quiet Riot (hair band from the 80’s – justification: Police [attempt to] quell a riot)
Five for Fighting (riot → fight)
The Fifth Dimension (five → fifth)
Everclear (you could buy a fifth of Everclear (a grain alcohol))
Creedence Clearwater Revival (“clear” in common)
Er … yes. Sorry, obvious from over here it is. Big big hit with us. It meant something to anyone who was relatively young in the 80’s, not least because of a vague association between the song’s title and lyrics and the phrase “Going for Gold” which had rather obvious euphemistic connotations.
Wow. Never heard that song. And I was indeed “relatively young in the 80’s”, birth year being 1968.
Over in the States, that song never bubbled up. Here it was only “True”. One-hit wonder AFAIK.
I guess I underestimated the cultural context of the game.
