Try my new game

While mowing the lawn yesterday and letting my mind wander, it invented a fun little word game to play with itself.

The object is to continue a list of names of musical acts (bands, singers, orchestras or other entities), with some justifiable link from one to the next. If the link between the two is not obvious or justifiable (clever stream-of-consciousness links are acceptable and encouraged), then you’re out. The judge’s (my) ruling is final as to whether you have sufficiently and/or cleverly justified your link. If it’s not obvious, please rationalize your answer.

This game would best be played with a circle of guests at a cocktail party, and speed is key. A failure would require the loser to drink.

Here is an example:

I’ll seed with “The Police”.

The Police
Quiet Riot (hair band from the 80’s – justification: Police [attempt to] quell a riot)
Five for Fighting (riot → fight)
The Fifth Dimension (five → fifth)
Everclear (you could buy a fifth of Everclear (a grain alcohol))
Creedence Clearwater Revival (“clear” in common)

Get it?
Who wants to play??
Help me name my game!

This game starts with (we’ll make it easy):

Chicago

Chicago? Shoot I was going to use Muddy Waters.

Boston

Bruce Springsteen (“The Boss”)

Buffalo Springfield

(Buffalo) Bill Bailey

The Beatles.

Ok, that was a close shave and a good save.

Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers.)

Iron Maiden, Pretty Maids, Pretty Boy Floyd,Pink Floyd, Red hot Chili Peppers

Metallica
(I.D.10-t: No fair doing more than one. You have to drink now.)

Golden Earring

Gold, it’s heavy and a metal.

Spandau Ballet

… now I’ve got the tune going through my head … again … grrr …

I name this game “Mary Chain Gang”.

I don’t get this one. …
Justification?

I assume…

Spandau Ballet-Gold

Er … yes. Sorry, obvious from over here it is. Big big hit with us. It meant something to anyone who was relatively young in the 80’s, not least because of a vague association between the song’s title and lyrics and the phrase “Going for Gold” which had rather obvious euphemistic connotations.

I think I may be over-explaining …

Wow. Never heard that song. And I was indeed “relatively young in the 80’s”, birth year being 1968.
Over in the States, that song never bubbled up. Here it was only “True”. One-hit wonder AFAIK.

I guess I underestimated the cultural context of the game.

Anyway, next band (following Spandau Ballet) is:

Dream Theater (Ballet → Theater — tenuous?)

Dion McGregor

(Go ahead, google him; you will be glad you did. Well . . . maybe.)

The Farm

[Old McGregor … leads to Liverpool band from the 90s]

The Who

OK, that was lame. Love the contest. I’m copywriting it.

The first basemen?

Elvis Costello
