Trad scene in NYC?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for some info on the trad scene in NYC. I’m a music student at University College Cork (I play trad flute, whistle, and some fiddle - I’ve been playing for 12 years now) and, having failed to track down a summer job so far  I’m thinking about heading to NYC for the rest of the summer.
So here’s my list of questions! Are there regular sessions around the city? Is there a demand for sessions or people to play? Is it difficult to get involved in established (paid) sessions? What’s the teaching situation like - is there a demand? Is there a demand during the summer? Are most lessons organised through schools or centres, or privately? What are teaching rates like?
Hmmm… I think that’s it. (For now…) If anyone can help me out, that’d be great!
Thanks,
Deirdre

Hello,

Swing by the NY Irish Arts Center at:
http://www.irishartscenter.org/

Someone there might be able to help you.

Also, contact me off this list at jdharv@rhodeirish.net and I’ll put you in touch with a friend of mine who lives in RI now but he cut his teeth in the NY scene and still has lots of contacts there.

I’m not being secretive, I just don’t want to post his email address for all to see (including the spam spiders).

Take care,
John Harvey
