new york city session

hey, i know, i know, i search the archives - but know that sessions change sometimes from month to month.

any ideas about current sessioning in NYC? i am going with my class of students next week and trying to decide whether or not to bring an instrument (full set of pipes) or not.

There is the 11th street bar session that is killer. Tony D runs that joint. He is known as the Godfather of Irish fiddle :sunglasses:

I thought Brian Rooney had that honor.

Isn’t there still a session at](http://www.liveatmonas.com/%22%3Eat) Mona’s on Monday nights?

Moved outa NYC about a year ago, myself, but here is(was?) a website put together on sessions and such there - hopefully up-to-date.

:astonished:

Holy mackerel, emerald! Who picked THAT color combination? I hope that’s not what all the fashion designers will be using next year.

That’s not emerald. That’s chartreuse! I can’t even read the page! Someone needs to adjust the colour balance on their video card.

Yep - I brought up the site, after recommending it; I can’t read it, either.. I thought it was just 'cause I’m color blind.
Well, there’s another reason I’m happy I left NYC… Some good people and players there, though…

This is a little more up-to-date, and easier on the eyes:

I’d recommend Dempsey’s on the Lower East Side on Tuesday nights, just as a nice open session.

Hey Mike – how’ve you been? Hope all’s been well!

Yep, murphguide — I think there was or is a link to that from the unreadable site I had, so it was actually murphguide where I’d find sessions, albeit indirectly.

Are there still sessions over in the 40s on 2nd and 3rd? I used to hit O’Neill’s, and Kate Kearneys, and a few others I’ve forgotten. There were also a few on the west side in the 50s, Tir na Nog I think?, and BB Doyles? I guess if any of these are still happening, they’d be on murphguide…

All the best,
Gordon

Edit… just checked it - one or two are there, not the others, and a few I don’t know. New York does jump about, doesn’t it?

Hey, Gordon,

Doing well, and thanks for asking.

Kate Kearney’s is long gone. That used to be Andy McGann’s session, and you could walk there from O’Neill’s on a Saturday night. O’Neill’s is still on for Saturday and Sunday nights, as far as I’m aware, though.

Don’t know how up-to-date that list is, but at least it’s a start.

I suppose the Irish Echo, the Irish Voice, and the Irish Emigrant would also have information. Don’t know if it’s available on line or only in print.

Good luck!

Visitors to New York --and very often the Northeast-- will find a plethora of trad music and cance events on a calendar maintained by one of the local dance mavens who keeps it pretty much up to date. You will find a lot of session details and links there and certainly enough info to research on your own

How long will you be there John?

I’ll be there 23rd, 24th, 25th.
