Irish trad scene in Missouri?

Hi!

I’m thinking of spending the summer in Columbia, MO, playing and teaching ITM, & I’m wondering what the trad scene is like around there. If anyone can help, I’ll be really grateful…

I’m in Kansas City which is about 2 hours west of Columbia. I know for sure of a slow session I just started attending in KC, and I can check this Thursday of any other sessions (I’ll specifically ask about Columbia). St. Louis an hour and a half to Columbia’s east has, I’m pretty sure, a fairly active ITM scene. In my area, several pubs featuring Irish music, but it’s more pub songs than anything. Kirk Lynch the pipe maker lives about 30 minutes north of me in Weston, Connie Dover’s up there, too.

I’m pretty sure St. Louis has a good trad scene - there are usually quite a few US competitors in the All-Ireland Fleadh from there. I thought I’d check and see if anyone know any more than I do…
Any more info would, of course, be great too!

St. Louis is indeed a good place for trad music, or at least it has been in the past – check out McGuirk’s pub.

I know Columbia is smack in the middle of Missouri so your almost equidistant to KC and StL (probably a little further to StL). I don’t know about the trad scene in Columbia but it is a university town so one could be present or the interest could be easily generated.

Did you know that the Gelfling in your photo is playing an ancient “shepherds pipe”? This is a twin-pipe with 2 closed tubes and 4 toneholes on each pipe. Each side can play a full octave with only 4 toneholes, just like an ocarina. Fun huh?! :thumbsup:

There is a weekly session open to all players in Webster Groves, MO {St. Louis Suburb} every Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM at Music Folk.

You’re welcome to stop in… that goes for everone… beginners and masters!

We play most of the tunes out of L. E. McCullough’s 121 Traditional Irish Tunes Book as well as many other traditional tunes.
