This is Customer Service !

I live two hours drive from Elderly Instruments, a well known guitar store in Lansing, Michigan, which also sells whistles.
I ordered a Susato low D from them, and I received it the day after, but unfortunately they sent me by mistake a low G.
I called them on Thursday evening to inform about the mistake, and this is what Stephen (head of the Mail order department) did: he immediately shipped to me a new Susato low D, without waiting for me to send the wrong whistle back. More over, because on Saturday Fed Ex Ground does not deliver, they shipped it as Fed Ex Air Overnight in order to avoid a late delivery on Monday and let me get the whistle for the week-end.
Last but not least, they detracted the shipping expenses from my charge and gave me an additional 10 % discount.
Wow. This is Customer Service (and, by the way, I do not work for Eldely Instruments) !

Elderly is top shelf. Every time I’ve orderd from them, they’ve gone above and beyond my expecations. May they be in business and prosperous, at least as long as I’m alive…

My old Folklore Institute buddy, Bob Blackman, has been the IT guy at Elderly for many years, and he deserves some of the credit for their smooth operations. It’s nice to put faces to anonymous stores, and Bob is a fine musician and very nice guy.

The only problem with Elderly Instruments is trying to drag your spouse out of there when he realizes that he’s not only allowed, but encouraged to play any of the hundreds and hundreds of top-notch guitars in the store. They even offer you a pick if they notice you’re a flat-picker and didn’t happen to bring one with you.

The same attitude applies to their banjos, ukes, mandolins, and even hammered dulcimers. It’s a pretty refreshing change from the places that make you take off your rings and try out their guitars under the watchful eye of a suspicious employee.

Actually, the real problem with Elderly is that is very hard to walk out of the store without having spent at least $50, even if you just dropped in to browse for a few minutes.

The only problem with Elderly Instruments is

the people that you run into…
