Sean Potts played the other night and Tommy Keane is going to be on a later episode.

If you go back on series one and two there are other pipers.

Its on the RTE Player now if you have an Irish i.p. - http://www.rte.ie/player/#v=1054421

I am just wondering if anybody has figured out a work around for this.
We’re sorry but RTÉ player is currently only available to viewers in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Is there a way of changing your IP to one that RTE accepts as being in Ireland  ?

My question is “why”? What advantage is there to limiting access to a particular territory, when people in that territory can watch the episode on television?

At the risk of being shunned by the right-thinking supporters of RTE’s intellectual property rights, could any charitable pirate please put this episode up on YouTube?

Its sounds silly that they should restrict access to people in Ireland ,maybe there is some technical reason for it .
Just to rub it in a bit more Harry Bradley(who show’s up here from time to time) will be playing on the episode on the 11th. Harry’s a great piper but he’ll probably be playing with his flute.

Far as I know it’s cos of TV licencing fees. If you’re outside Ireland you don’t pay them (like many inside Ireland too to be honest) so they won’t let you watch their shows. It’s a publicly funded - not commercially funded - channel. Same with the BBC, can’t watch that outside the UK.

I’m in London these days, fierce annoying that I can’t watch these. I know you can change your IP address but I’ve never successfully done it (pure thick like)

RTE’s logic astounds me. They should talk with their friends at TG4, without whom I’d be completely lost. TG4 has an excellent web service. Stuff that’s broadcast on TV is archived for 6 or 8 weeks on their website. They deserve a gold medal the size of a plate for that.

The most common way to get around the country specific IP requirement is to use a proxy server from the target country. So for people in the EU who want to watch the USA restricted network TV shows, they would use one of the USA proxy sites, and for those of us in the US who want to access RTE we need an Irish proxy server. There are a number of programs out in the Internet Jungle which allow anonymous surfing via proxies, but only a few that I have seen which offer the use of specific country proxies, and even fewer that have Ireland on their list. Needless to say the later are not free sites, although they do seem to have brief trial periods. The other problem is that these programs alter your browser which tends to make antispyware programs very unhappy. They will either try to block the change or complain that you are trying to install a trojan. And so it may be…proxy at your own risk. I share your frustration but I think I will wait for some kind “.ie” sole to post the RTE clip to youtube or one of the file downloading sites.

For most shows, the explanation for the restriction is straightforward - usually the broadcaster has negotiated licenses with the various rightsholders which are restricted to the terrestrial broadcast regions. Since the advertising content is usually targeted for one region, the rights are also sought only for a limited region. Thus it would actually be illegal for RTE to make such content available outside of Ireland.

For in-house content such as The Full Set, RTE may indeed have the right to license the content as they wish - provided the contracts they have signed with the performing artists are sufficiently broad. However this leads to complaints from the public such as “why can I view program X and not program Y?”, and of course the increased bandwidth costs money. Unless RTE comes up with a revenue model for advertising outside the target region, I don’t see a motivation. It doesn’t really come under their public access remit either, since that’s limited to Ireland.

One could argue that Bord Failte or some Irish arts outreach organization could underwrite the e-broadcast of cultural programming, as already happens in the production phase; I think that’s the most likely avenue to make content like this available, but I don’t see it happening in the current fiscal climate.

p.s. - This problem annoys me where BBC is involved, too, since I can’t access the BBC internet player; in the days when I had a television I got used to watching BBC documentaries (they used to be good, anyhow  ), but that’s only because I live near enough to a BBC transmitter to get terrestrial BBC TV. I am pretty sure that if they could, BBC would restrict viewing of their signals to UK territory (and license-fee-paying households!). With the advent of digital and the move towards internet delivery I think that will eventually happen, too - with exceptions for people who purchase “cable-like” extra-channel packages.

There are companies that provide an Irish proxy server in order to get around geo-ip blocking. One such company is http://www.irishproxyserver.com

A few episodes of The Full Set are already on youtube but the Sean Potts one isn’t yet.

There’s also this yoke called www.hidemyass.com - might be an option? If anyone has time let me know if it works.

Patrick.

It changes how much you have to pay for the rights. {robably even how much you have to pay the talent.

I’ve been using an account from www.overplay.net for the past month or two, and gotta say - it’s bloody great getting RTE from over here in Dubai. Not a hint of slowdown and looks like theyre geared up purely for streaming TV, so perfect match.

v. impressed.

Deeja what is your affiliation with this website? I take it you are advertising for it here? I found posts almost identical to yours by a guy name mikeoscar on various other random forums.
