With all due respect to Maria Weedon, her comment, “I do not know who spreads
the rumours, but we are not going to produce a Low whistle in any key.” appears to conflict with information Clarke has made public on their own website. Specifically, there is a series of messages on the “Q & A” section of Clarke’s website at http://www.clarketinwhistle.com that refers to Clarkes devlopment of Low whistles. Here are a four I copied (unedited) directly from their website; there are several others I did not copy. The messages are presented from most recent to oldest. Draw your own conclusions.
Message from poster to Clarke’s forum (posted Nov 24, 2001):
"Dear Norm
There is a bit of a buzz in the whistle playing community (esp. those who are devoted to their Clarkes). Rumour has it that Clarke may have considered producing a Low D. . . or is this just wishful thinking on our behalf?
Cheers . . . Tony P"
Response from Norman Dannatt (posted Dec 2, 2001)::
"Hi Tony,
You are partly right. We are considering making a low D but not just now.
We have a lot of other R. & D. on at the moment and that is taking up all our available time.
When eventually a low D is made and marketed you’ll know. We’ll let the world know!
Patience!
Best wishes,
Norman"
Another message posted a few months earlier (July 12, 2001):
"I am just curious:
When Clarke does introduce the long-desired Low D, will it be a scaled-up version of the original (wood plug), or will it be like a big Sweetone (plastic mouthpiece)?
I am hoping for the former, but I’ll be happy with it either way."
Response from Norman Dannatt (July 15, 2001)"
"Hi Patrick,
We’re still working on it.
I do not know which it will be yet.
Norman"
Still another message (July 2, 2001):
“Hi … I would like to know if you will be producing a Low D soon … I love your Tin Whistles with the wood plugs … I hope you soon will be producing the Low D.
”
Response from Norman Dannatt (July 7, 2001):
"Hi Blaine,
Yes we do intend to produce a low D eventually. At the present moment all our energies are taken up with other projects.
It will be some time before we get down to manufacturing the low D. When we do, everyone will hear about it!
Norman"
And, going way back to March 2000 there is this gem:
“Will there be a Sweetone low D soon? I just got some Sweetones and really love the sound, wondering what a Low D would sound like. Thanks.”
With this response from Norman Dannatt :
"dear Tots,
Eventually! The prototype has already been made.
patience!!!
Norman"
