Swept snowdrifts off my roof today...

If you’re lucky enough not to be in the path of the blizzard trekking across most of the US, I thought I’d share my latest endeavor…I swept snowdrifts off my roof today.

We’ve had about a foot of snow so far with about 5 more hours of snow to go. A foot of snow isn’t a lot to my friends up in the US’s Canada-lite zone (Wisconsin, North Dakota, Minnesota), but the 35-40 mile per hour winds are what are making things really interesting and leading to pretty impressive snowdrifts (4 feet in my neighborhood…they were about 3 feet high on my roof).

You know when federal offices close it’s pretty bad (this is our first closing, I believe, in the 11 years I’ve worked for the feds).

Just had to share my joy. I truly hope this is missing my mother in law in Eau Claire, Wisconsin - I think her head would explode if she had another foot of snow dumped on her driveway.

Eric

I know it’s no consolation, but I’d actually prefer a foot dump right about now. It would make lugging the snowblower out every other day seem a little more worth it, rather than these piddling measly two-inch whimpers we’ve been dealing with. You still have to get rid of it either way.

On the plus side, yes, things are comparatively easy sailing here in the Twin Cities for the time being.

Well, that’s good to hear that things up your way aren’t as drastic. I agree constant 2-3 inch snowfalls can get annoying.

This storm seems to be moving east…and we all know the east coast needs a bit more snow.

Eric

In southern Connecticut we are expecting a sample of every gradient between snow and rain. Following this, a giant Zamboni will descend from the sky.

It had better.

I noticed the other day that witch-hazel and flowering quince are coming into bloom, here in the great wet north.

The native witch hazel is in bloom here in the Mid-Atlantic as well, along with the skunk cabbage. The temp. is unbearably cold, 59 °F, I may have to put on long pants before the day is over.

I agree Will…my current temp is 5, just 5. Should hit -10 below Fahrenheit tonight.

I suggest we bury anyone who mentions a temperature above freezing in the 4’ wall of snow that lines my driveway.

Eric

Okay, so that’s Will, Eric, and me. That should be enough to get a hammerlock on the weasel and toss 'im out into the snirt.

I was gonna send an e-mail to one of my brothers who lives in Texas to come north for some heat and sunshine, personally I really prefer it around -5 °F. Good XC skiing weather.

We’re up here freezing to death, and he’s taking about “good skiing weather”?!?!? :tantrum:

I just spent about an hour in an uninsulated barn. I’m pretty sure it was in the single digits in there.

Yes, I’ve met people like you. And wondered where the guys with the butterfly nets are when you need 'em.

Lepidopterists don’t typically do well in low temps, don’t ya just love after a week or two of sub-zero temps and it goes up to like 32 °F, it’s like a heat wave, a tropical heat wave.

CX skiers are a bit strange up here at times. Around every full moon they have candle lit trails up at Lebanon Hills, and then we have the Luminary Loppet which is as much art/cycling/Skijoring/BBQ event. We’ll probably be strapping on some headlamps and go skiing tonight due to the warm weather. To bad it is going to be a sliver of a crescent moon tonight.

We actually hit 28 today…I wore a spring/fall type of coat and was comfortable. It does feel like a tropical heat wave! Luckily, it’s still below freezing so I don’t have to bury myself in my snow piles..

And it’s only 22 days to till the Birkie! http://www.birkie.com/page/show/104564-home

And that’s the only good thing about it.

I take Preparation H for that.

I’m much more comfortable with “using” Preparation H rather than “taking” it…the label is pretty clear on where and how to administer.

Thanks for the tip, though.
