Forgive me if this has been discussed at length already or the subject of a site I am not aware of, but I’m thinking of visiting Ireland and the UK in July and August and would like to go to a summer school. I’m 62 and in all honesty, am kind of looking more for an experience than a teacher who will rap my knuckles with a ruler or to be with 3 8 year olds who are already better than me and could learn 50 tunes in the time it would take me to learn one. But, I can play and do want to try all the same. Any recommendations? Thanks.
Lots of options. Willy Clancy Summer School in Miltown probably the biggest (you won’t get your knuckles rapped but you might get 8 year olds). Value for money if you want six days of classes and entry to the recitals etc. Better if you have a friend or two to hang out with amongst the crowds. Drumshanbo, Achill, etc.
But the smaller weekend festivals often have workshops attached. A few links below, world’s your oyster…

I don’t think this is an official website for Scoil Samraidh Willie Clancy
Is the official page active/updated?
41st Summer School - 6-14 July 2013
There’s not really an offical site. programs used to be posted on Bill Lynch’s set dancing site. More recently Oidhreacht an Chláir has posted details. There’s no program for next year published yet.
Thanks, that’s where I was looking for it
Tubbercurry is really nice. Small and laid back. However you still might encounter 8 year olds…
If you’re after more of a mindblowing experience rather than just learning tunes then the Willie Clancy Summer School would be worth visiting. Apart from the classes 10 am. to 1. pm., there are the interesting afternoon lectures and concerts/tributes. In the evenings you can go to the 8 pm to 10 pm concerts. Then there are sessions where if you can get a seat you can play, or just stand in the pub and listen. Plenty of music, and interesting people to check out from morning to midnight and beyond. There are also workshops and master classes. Can get wild and crazy now and then, but well worth experiencing. See you there!!!
Thanks all. I appreciate your suggestions and hope to catch up with some of you this summer!
