Sounds of your pipes

Hi all,

In follow up to the fantastically popular “pictures of your pipes” thread, how about an acoustic version? It’d be interesting to be able to hear the different sounds and styles of people posting. Put a sound to the name or opinion as it where.

Perhaps someone with the technical know- how could explain how to post a sound sample to the forum? As I haven’t a clue.

Marcus,
list the URL where the sound file is contained. For example:
http://www.coulterpipes.com/home/mp3/alanburton.mp3

The file should play from your browser or open a seperate player depending on your software settings.
Is this what you are looking to do?

Thanks Tony,

There’s a much more interesting bit of Alan playing at:

As for me playing try:

far too much reverb i know

Here’s my new Davy Stephenson practice set. I love the way the pipes sound, although the guy behind the wheel (me) could be better… Oh well it’s only been two months…what can you expect, huh? You can tell I’m having a little trouble getting those top notes (B to back D) in tune. It’s gonna take a slightly un-traditional fingering style, I fear. Haven’t figured it out yet.

The set’s cocobolo and boxwood with brass…

Are you coming to the UK sometime?

Boyd

Marcus,

This is hopefully a good idea! At the very least it’s a “money where your mouth is” for the “pretty” pipers.

You can always send them to Clips n Snips like I and many others did.

(NB. Tonys link to me is not the sound of my pipes, it’s the sound of me playing Marcus’ pipes or something)

Alan

Hi Joey,
I just listened to your clip, wow :boggle: . Only 2 months, do you practice 24/7? wish I could play as good. Your chanter sounds great by the way.

Cheers, Mac

I can tell you’re practicing hard, Joey, keep it up. Get out to some of the tionols as soon as you can.

Very nice playing Joey!
I was just squawking after 2 months!

marcus.

Nice going, Joey. Can you tell me how you recorded the tune? I’m a five month guy and very impressed with your progress. Puts more heat on me. Thanks

Hey everyone, thanks for the encouragement.

Boyd, I’m still planning on coming over in January for the spring semester. I’m really excited to see the UK! Maybe I could stop by and see your clinic sometime, too…?

Pipey, believe it or not, all I used to record that was my computer mic and Cool Edit Pro. I wasn’t expecting it to turn out at all, but the sound actually picked up pretty clearly. Granted I had to amplify it by about 13 dB, and then I applied a preset reverb - “medium concert hall (open).”

I recorded Amazing Grace, too, which I think actually turned out decent, for me.

I bet there’s loads of pipers up and down the country who you could meet up with!

Where will you be based?

Boyd

sorry to hijack the thread but have just visited marcuss web site and was mightily impressed not only by the sound of his pipes but also his playing. I think he has only about 1 years head start over me in terms of playing the pipes, but whats more astonishing is that i dont think he played irish music on any other instrument before taking up the pipes. Well done marcus!
here`s his site, well worth a visit:

Thanks Neill! (insert emoticon for blushing) and a belated welcome aboard C&F.

We’re getting the Birmingham pipers club back up and running over the next month so should see you soon.
