Very interesting! I have a flute reminiscent of this, one of a dozen or so traversi that Patrick Olwell made early in his career. One might wonder about a Baroque flute made by a (young) Irish flute maker, but mine is absolutely fantastic.

I find the listing a little misleading. The lister says: “I have reluctantly decided to sell this now, as no one plays Irish music here anymore and it sits unused.” This flute is based on one by a maker who died before 1800. It’s a baroque/rococo flute, small holes, fully chromatic with one key. If it’s like other Grensers I’ve played, it’s capable of more volume than some traversi, but it’s not well-suited to playing Irish dance music.

BTW, this is a re-listing - didn’t sell 1st time around.

Hi folks. The listing is mine. With regard to the flute’s suitability for Irish music, I’ll point out the following. It was made for a well regarded Irish player from Antrim, actually a good friend of Sam Murray’s from his home town. I have a video clip from RTE, sent to me by the previous owner, of this flute being made along with interviews with Sam and his friend, quite fascinating. It was made with two heads which have very different characteristics. One is suited to baroque playing, the other to Irish. The former has a far more focused, delicate sound and is more challenging to play, but has a gorgeous sound. The other is a much bolder, louder sound and far more forgiving. The flute is certainly a one-off and made with stunning attention to detail. It has been played and rated very highly by several well known players. It really is a sacrifice, but my daughter has shifted her focus entirely to classical flute now and has no use for the instrument anymore, so it lies unplayed, which I think is a real shame. It needs to be played and loved. Cheers!

Not surprising at $1650 !

Thanks for ringing in, munchiehk. I would likely bid on this flute had I not taken some financial hits lately. Good luck with the listing.

Hi munchiehk

stick the link up on your ebay page so people can see the youtube clip, I think most of the chiffers here have watched the program your refering to, as I know of only one program on RTE that documents Sam Murrays work and the great fluters that play his instruments, it is a great looking peice of boxwood, cant say I noticed Sam working on it in the program, but then I wasn’t looking for it, but if I were a fluter in the market for a one off rare flute to play or collect this would be a good one to get.

all the best

sponge

The Murray flute is up fore sale again.

Seem to surface almost annually with the two headjoints and the same description (2010, 2012, 2013) ?
Same seller as last time but the starting bid has been reduced.

I bought this Flute years ago, didn’t like it and sent it back to the seller for a refund. At the time the Seller was in Canada. It wasn’t a very good sounding Flute for Period music and even with the extra head joint was certainly not a Flute that would be worth playing Irish Music on. Now the history of the Flute that follows it around would make one hopeful that they would be getting a fine sounding Instrument, but again that is not the case here
That said it was a very nice looking Flute and one could buy it and just use it as a display item  .
You’d think ALL Flutes made by a Top Maker like Sam Murray would be great sounding s, but sadly that’s not the case here.
Sorry to be so frank, but I just want to caution a potiential Buyer as to what he or she would be getting.
Now if this Flute at some point had been reworked by someone it could certainly sound better, but I doubt that that had happened
