Another Rudall Carte (on ebay)

well, this one makes that Blee flute look affordable…

Only one pic yet, no serial number, no description of the history/provenance of the flute, no measurements, no statement as to what pitch the flute is (A=440, or possibly HP) and a starting price that looks, to me, way over the odds for a flute like this.

I think I’ll pass …

[even though it’s just down the road from me]

Agreed the starting price is, to say the least, “optimistic”, but pending the promised further detail, I see no reason to be overly doubtful of the genuineness of the listing. It does seem strange to me to bother to make the listing public before preparing and displaying everything one intends to display as a vendor, though. The listing does tell us the # is in the 6600s - and given the history of the perpetually recycled con listing of #7049 maybe some caginess over publishing the serial # is justified, though I’m not really sure how it can make a significant difference.

FWIW our own Steffen Gabriel is offering an ostensibly very similar flute for c£2700 - a bargain! £3k is about right for one of these, I’d say.

have to confess that I’ve been waiting for a suitable one to come up at my budget for a while now. The prices seemed to be out of control in the boom times compared to the kind of figure you’d pay for a new Grinter/Olwell/Wilkes etc. unless you’re looking at an unusually pristine and uncracked collector’s item (and I’m guessing that’s where most of the £4000+ flutes were going?). £2,000 would be a bargain, Steffen’s seemed like a realistic price.

Well, the listing of the eBay RC&Co has been amended - starting price reduced (!!!) to £4k and much fuller detail added - seems candid and convincing enough, but still only one more general picture. Looks to me from the dimensions that Steffen’s was the more desirable - a bargain indeed to the lucky buyer!

Now I wonder who bought Steffen’s flute …

I know who did

the ebay flute is legit. It had sold eBay a while ago. I’ve been in correspondence with the owner.
serial is 6604.
Interesting flute, if not for the wood sleeve on the slide…extremely unusual for such a late flute.

The seller added some pictures and the starting bid is now 3800£. Strange.

With a day and a bit of the listing left and a no bids, a bit of realism developing? I note the vendor is now inviting offers too.

divide the asking price by 2 for a reality check

“Recently restored by a top flute expert/maker.”

Funny … the thread wrapping doesn’t look too good to me.

And other parts of the description seem to suggest that more than one person worked on the flute, in contradiction to the above statement. “A crack in the back of the head has been professionaly restored. The crack was neat and easy to repair. One of the silver rings has been replaced by a professional silver craftmaker.”

I don’t get the “costumed-fitted … case”. Presumably this is “custom-fitted”? But, if so, that’s the kind of mistake in English that I’ve seen in some very interesting letters which I received recently from representatives of a previously unknown (to me) long lost relative, now deceased, who has apparently left me a lot of money … I’m thinking of writing back …

But I’m probably wrong - David says it’s legit …

The ebay name of the seller “Barzaz” sounds breton to me. That’s maybe why is english is not the best. (What I can understand  )

According to my extensive research - typing “Barzaz” into Google - “Barz” is cognate with “Bard”, and “barzaz / barzhaz” means roughly “ballads or balladry of the Breton bards”.

There’s also “El Zaz Bar” pub in Montréal, but I guess that’s not it.

I suspect it simply implies that our man is a J-M V fan.

Could be, clever man.

Less than four hours to go. The starting bid, 3.800 is too high for these old flutes these days, obviously. 2500 would be more realistic and go from there, although I doubt it would go for more than 3000. Looks like a very nice flute though

Well, it’s been relisted immediately. Is the seller trying a sort of Dutch auction, reducing the price bit by bit until someone bites?
