Quick Time slow downer

i was asking some time ago , about saving vids and stuff to my computer , and a few people gave me suggestions , which i didn’t follow up on , no surprise , as i am brain dead when it comes to techie things.
but , thank you to those people anyway .

however , a computer geek pal of mine got me a wonderful toy from the net , for free.
now , it is working grand on my mac , so , i have no idea if it works on pc.
it’s an add on or plug in or whatever you call them , and it is to be found here .

http://perian.org/#download

hope this shows up as a link , if not , just type in perian.org and go to the download .

when the Perian thing is in Quick Time , and you want to check the slow down effect , from your iTunes , drag and drop a track onto the desk top ,it’ll make that nice clang , and appear there as an mp3 , and then drop that into the Quick Time Icon in the dock , and from the Window , in the tool bar , click on , show the a/v control .
if you are watching a vid with Quick Time , do the same , click Window and , show a/v control
i found that particularly handy , when trying to work out Nic Gareiss’ steps from Youtube .
what a cool dude , reminds me of Seosamh O’Neachtain .
hey , when i was their age , i could throw a few shapes , oh yeah…

by the way , if you save a vid , make sure you rename it as blah blah .flv (don’t forget the dot )
if none of this makes sense , i’ll get my pal to post instructions .
now , while this will be no big problem , i have to tell you that he is French, his English is disgraceful , and worse , he plays flat pipes .

Well, Perian does not add the speed control, that’s native to Quicktime.
But it is neat to have support in Quicktime for other video formats
(which is what Perian gives you)

so , i had this slow down facility , all the while that i had Quick Time ?

my apologies for stating the bleedin’ obvious , but i honestly thought that i had been given a really good unknown .

now there’s a topic.

stbo’s .

Oh no, it’s not obvious. I’ve been meaning to post about this since I found it
while looking for slow downers for the Mac. A lot of people probably never
have to bring anything up in Quicktime, itself, since iTunes comes up for most
media files. I don’t know why the A/V menu doesn’t exist for iTunes, though.
It would be nice to have the slowdowner there…

P.S., another way to bring up something in Quicktime is to go to the file in the
Finder and Control-click on it (or right click if you have 2 buttons). The menu
that comes up should include an Open with Quicktime option.

Bless you both – I had no idea! Can’t wait to play around with it. And ditto the iTunes thing … it’d be grand! Though perhaps we “wanting niche-y instrumental tunes slowed down so we can learn them” types aren’t in the primary iTunes demographic?

Darn. (or maybe not. I like being a minority. Makes me feel special.)

Here’s a tool that I found that you might get some use out of as well.

http://keepvid.com/

Dow , i had a look at that ,and it looks very handy , very simple .
but they want money for it
i don’t have a credit card , and i haven’t gone the road of pay pal etc.
iv’e been pretty good so far , in not buying , except when i really have to , then i phone whoever , and get the appropriate bank draft , and post it .
and this is , for me , a biggish deal ,so i’d say i saved myself at least €2,000,000 in the last year.

there is a vid saving facility on my Quick Time which i suspect is as a result of having the Perian add on .
but like all tried , tested , trusted and true , truckers , i just drive this thing , i never look under the hood .
it is a little involved as you have to go to Window ,Activity , wait and watch for the mbyte download , double click on that , it downloads to the desk top , rename it , store it in a file .

well , i’m off now to bring some of those bleedin’ Eb Flute recordings down to my level , especially the parson’s march , by Harry , in F ? ( Sweet Heart of…) with my new shiny swiss army thingy .
it’s free ! and there’s one for everyone in audience ..

Where do they ask for money? The instructions are at the bottom of that page. it says:

How to use

  1. Choose the site you want to download from.
  2. Copy the link of the page with the video on it and paste it in the textbox above.
  3. If you download an flv file, you need an FLV player.

I just did another test download, and it works perfectly. Oh. I see. it costs if you convert it from the .flv format to mp4. Some videos will download in mp4, and I guess some won’t.

I’m really pleased that Fearfaoin pointed out that Quicktime has a slow-down feature. I never knew it existed. Since I didn’t fully understand the earlier indication of how to use it, I thought I’d tell how I used it today to test this on a file I have in my iTunes folder:

Launch Quicktime
Choose “open file” from the Quicktime File menu.
Select the file you want to open from the iTunes Music folder.
From the Quicktime Window menu, select “Show A/V controls”.
The Playback Speed tool appears in the A/V controls window.
Choose a playback from 1/2x to 3x.
(There is also a pitch change tool you can use.)
Play!

I tested this on Brid O’Donohue’s recording of “The Green Groves of Erin”, and it worked beautifully (at 1/2 speed — at 3x speed, I found it rather unnerving).

Regards from sunny (but cool) Ann Arbor.

thank you , Dow , i’ll look at that again .
it looks a lot handier than all the hoohah that i go through to save my vids.

Celtic , i tried it the way you described it and it works ok , i just find it easier to open my iTunes , where all my tracks are , and drag whatever i need to the desk top , and from there , straight to the Quick Time icon , whereupon it opens in the mini QT player .
quicker for me , as i am getting on in years , and don’t have the luxury of 5 seconds it takes to find the file i want .

by the way , is that Bríd Ó’Donoghue , who is married to the Cillian Ó’Broin , Uilleann Pipe maker in Dingle ?

apologies , just checked , it’s Bríd Donnelly i’m thinking of , a deadly flute player.

Jim,

I went and double checked on that keepvid thing. On some videos it’ll let you download either an MP4 or a FLV formatted file. I think those are the higher quality. On others, however, it only lets you download the .flv file.

hope this helps.
