Brian finnegans (north star jig )

I’ve finally, after a lot of practice and listening, got Brian finnegans version of the north star jig http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gg-cMs5hJc up to speed, and can play along with the video.
When i slow down the video, Brian emphasizes with the slightest subtleties,( flutterings etc.) and every time i play it again i find some tiny things missing in my playing, and boy I’ve played this hundreds of times. I’m not talking about just ornaments, it’s the feeling behind them.
You can get so much out of one tune and there’s always new things to learn.

I’ve worked on this one as well. I find it takes quite a bit of work to assimilate another person’s playing style but it’s worth it!

Probably a stupid question, but how do you slow down the video?

Quicktime will do it - and keep the pitch the same…

Hi Crickett,

I asked the same question earlier on this thread https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/downloading-you-tube-for-learning/67897/9

I use tooble to download the url, and as said it goes automatically into itunes movies on my mac.
I then drag the video from there to desktop. From there i drag the video into quicktime player. The video pops up in quicktime player, press window, and then AV controls. You can adjust the speed and the pitch of the recording there.

You can actually change the pitch to another key of whistle, for example if the tune is played on a Eb whistle, you can sink the pitch down so that it sounds the same as a D, or even a C whistle

If you have the latest Mac, i.e. snow-leopard, the newer version of quicktime player will not allow you to do this.
I downloaded the older version of quicktime player 7 to enable this function.

I hope all of that makes sense? It’s quite easy really as I’m certainly no computer expert

If you have a pc, II’m not sure how you can do all of this, maybe someone else here can help?

Happy practicing

Chris

Is it just me or do others find playing back mp4 and mov files in Quicktime at half-speed sound “fluttery” on the PC? No good for hearing the ornaments.

I download the vid, rip the audio to mp3 using AoA Audio Extractor (freeware), and then slow the mp3 in Seventh String Tran$cribe (awesome proggy). Plus Transcribe gives you some visual feedback (the wave form) of what’s happening in the tune.

Problem is my to-do tune list is a mile long!!!

Hi m31,

I haven’t noticed any fluttering on my Mac

This seems like a heck of a lot of work compared to what i do, maybe it just sounds like that?

I paste the url address in tooble, http://tooble.tv/ it can be used on Mac or pc. And certainly on a mac the whole video goes straight into itunes automatically. From there i can either play the video direct in itunes, or drag into quicktime player where i can use the AV controls. It’s dead easy, and the you tube videos are all neatly archived in itunes movies library.

This is such a great tool for learning, sometimes you just can’t hear everything what’s going on in a tune without someone showing you, or slowing it down.

Thanks for the help. Tooble works great!

You Mac people.

No, it’s easy and fast. I use downloadhelper for Firefox (a plugin) and just drag the flv or mp4 into AoA Audio Extractor. Voila instant mp3.

Since I’m always open to new ideas  I downloaded tooble. Alas, it crashed on my PC.

You Mac people. :tomato:

I’m not saying a word

Thanks for re-introducing me to this beautiful tune. I love it, I love the off beat swings in it. Got any more?

I just love anything Brian finnegan plays this one maybe a little difficult  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOwAD5UQnzo
