Quick (I hope) computer question.

OK,

I lack terribly in computer chops! I’m trying to download GIMP the free imaging software and appearantly my computer needs some programs to run and download the Gimp source code. So when I down load something like this gs814w32.exe, from here http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/doc/AFPL/get814.htm

Should I download to “save” or to “open”? As you can see, I don’t really know what’t going on here.

Save.

Opening will not keep the files permanently on your hard drive.

Thanks energy.

I just noticed that I’m still using GIMP 1.2.3. Time for me to upgrade. Of course, then I would have to upgrade GTK+ and all that too, and that sounds like too much work (“work”), so I probably won’t. Lovely piece of software, though, I highly recommend it. That rather odd bit of “art” you see in the upper left corner of this post is something I drew in GIMP on a lazy Sunday afternoon…

BTW, you don’t need GhostScript to run GIMP, you only need it if you want to create, edit, or view PostScript files.

Well, Energy, looks like I’m going to have quite a bit of fun learning this one! Just hope I don’t crash XP in the process. If I do, I’ll probably have to call those computer nerds that make house calls.

…and I didn’t even know there was a Windows version of GIMP available. I’ll have to check it out.

You’re definately better off getting this from the source: http://www.gimp.org/windows/

Bob

Sorry, following the links for this will take you here for a good download source for the GTK and GIMP: http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/stable.html

Yes, follow the links and try to understand the techno-talk, it’s a bizarre form of bureaucracy I say! :admin:

I probably need to upgrade too. My version is kinda buggy.

All vocations have that: School, work, hobbies and yes even music. It keeps those that would from hurting themselves, or others!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not that bad. You just need to download and install GTK+ 2 for Windows (version 2.4.3), and then download and install The Gimp for Windows (version 2.0.2). The GTK (Gnu Took Kit) is a library of low level graphics functionality that the GIMP program is build on top of.

I assume you do have a program like Winzip to open .zip files, right?

Good question Norseman, I’m about to try and find out. This is taking all afternoon, as I run errands and try to cook dinner and figure out what’s what. grumble grumble.

I will try and not pity myself as I suppose everyone goes through this as a computer novice. Your comments are helpful thanks!

oops, it’s evening now!

Right, I think it’s on my computer now! As I type this, the help application is downloading.

Now what?

Ok, I have to ask… what is gimp?

I looked at the links to download and it appears to be an image editor? correct?

I guess what I’m really wondering is how is it of use to so many here on the whistle forum? Does is have any whistle-specific qualities that I might like? Notation stuff?

Is there yet another useful toy out there I’m missing out on?

Thanks
Sand

Here’s part of the intro from the main GIMP page:

GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.

About the only thing whistle related that this could be used for would be to create an avatar for Chiff & Fipple.
