Picture of a keyed Olwell flute?

Does anyone have a picture of a keyed Olwell flute? He has no website, and I’m eager to see one. Thanks.

Fainting…

Liney, you handsome devil! Didn’t know you looked so much like me. Cheers,

Rob

i think the geek factor is very high in these shots…no more gin and tonics before picture taking…3 guys touching each other’s flutes…geez…

Ha! Maybe this proves a genetic predisposition toward Olwell flutes…

I wear my hair like the dude (me) in my avatar now though…

Are there three cocus flutes in that picture? Wow!

Just a few days ago I received an e-mail from Aaron Olwell that he’s been working on a flute for me- “Pratten”, blackwood, keyed, half-lined head - and that it will be ready in a few weeks. This weekend is my 30th birthday. I can’t imagine a better birthday gift.

Best,
Chris

Sorry for all the threads by the way, I’m only learning how to use this message board. Lovely photos of the flutes, thanks! I don’t know yet how to upload a photo of my Prowse, but I’ll get there.

Yea I suspect it’s pretty tricky trying to recreate a picture like that

Too bad that they’re just six-keyers…

Hopefully you can see this. A picture of my “T. Prowse, London” in cocus:

You have to link the image directly. But use the thumbnail provided by imageshack, the original file is way too huge, even for big screens!

Lovely flute!

Edit: Ah, you already did.

Hear, hear. All those naked feet are rather disturbing, don’t you think?

You know what else is tricky? Using the quote function appropriately. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ignoring for a moment all the dashing Olwell owners (easy, now, ladies), I think I spy, amongst other delicacies familiar and otherwise:

  1. Aran’s old flute with the radical key positions

  2. a keyed flute in Eb

Any marks? Cheers,

Rob (who abides…)

  1. Aran’s old flute with the radical key positions

a keen eye there affirmative on both..also two cocus Nicholson Pratten crossings…the only two in existence, and one Pratten cocus, one of only 4 made from the same block of cocus, one of which is owned by the player in the 1st picture in this thread..

all of these flutes are absolutely superb…and as a purely biased opinion, I’ve not seen a match to the cocus Pratten in all the years of playing different flutes of high caliber, including original rudalls and prattens of high quality. The closest in quality in my opinion are the newer Wilkes flutes recognizing that these are of a Rudall design and not a Pratten model. Both just great fantastic flutes.

I would note though that these Olwells play at amazing sensitivity as well…great balance, power, perfect tuning, the works…

Oddy enough, I think I’ve played most of the flutes in that lineup one way or another, down through the years. My own “Nicholson” flute, #473, is a hybrid with a Pratten, if by that you mean a Nicholson-ish hole pattern with a wide-open Pratten-style bore and footjoint. It’s blackwood, though. Cheers,

Rob

Anyone got any pictures of their Rudall Rose flutes? I’d love to see. And could anyone say what the real qualities of a Rudall Rose flute are, versus any other flute? Thanks!

Thalatta, do you mean genuine original R&Rs or modern-made copies or “in the style of” flutes? Or both?

If you browse through the flute pics sticky thread, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of pics, including some of my R&R somewhere - and I’ve put some pics of it on my Facebook (yes, I admit it! Search for Jem Hammond) recently if you can’t find 'em here. There are also pics of original R&Rs on David Migoya’s Rudall & Rose Catalogue. Or go to the Dayton C Miller Collection pages from the Library of Congress and you can view all the flute pics you could wish. Search eBay for past sales of R&Rs too - there have been several recently that should still bring up pictures you can view. Also, most of the modern maker websites on the Flute Makers List sticky will have pictures of their products detailing what designs they offer. Masses of resources out there quite readily available.

As for your request for comments on or descriptions of how R&Rs play, I don’t think I’m capable of writing a meaningful answer to that. You gotta DO it and see (well, hear/feel, that is).
