I’ve been listening all weekend to the great recording av Peter Horan & Fred Finn called “Music from Sligo”. Fred passed away in 1986 I believe, and “Music from Sligo” was released in 1988 compiled of earlier takes it seems. I’ve always believed that this recording was impossible to get hold of, not so. Imagine my surprise that CCE still have copies. I’ve always thought it was some kind of elusive holy grail of a recording. I ordered it a week ago from CCE and it came to Sweden 6 days later. Great service, only 12 euros. Some of the tracks seem to come from somebody’s tape recorder, “The Mullingar Races” set, “The Killavil”, & “The sunny banks” set are recorded too loud with a bad microphone, so the sound quality isn’t so good even if the playing is. Some of the tracks are simply wonderful, "The Duke of Leinster/London lasses set, Peter Horan’s solo "Maid of Mt Cisco set, the Martin Wynne set etc. Must have been great to have experienced Peter & Fred playing live back in the day. This must be about the best flute & fiddle duos I’ve ever heard on record. CCE: CL 33 from CCE, Dublin
Hey Thomas, this is on casette tape right?
Yes, cassette tape. 12-13 euros inclusive post.
They say that it will be availible on CD in early 2005. I wrote to them to see if that’s done yet.

About time it was released as a CD. Mind you it’s a very roughly recorded compilation of tunes and the sound is bad on some of the tracks, although as stated the playing is wonderful. such energy, they really sound as if they are enjoying themselves. Fiddler Andrea Brodie says that Peter Horan is working on a new CD together with Gerry Hastings which will be released shortly.
I heard back from Comhaltas and they said it will be done and on their site in about two weeks, and it will most likely cost 15 euro.
I first heard Peter and Fred play together on one of the “Comhaltas Live” videos that they produce, the last one in my subscription. They sound great together, and I’d love to get that recording.

Thomas, I think that was “Gerry Herrington” (fiddle). You may be thinking of “Father Gary Hastings” (flute).
Kevin Krell
Tread carefully, Kevin, - I don’t think they have “Fathers” in the Protestant Church Of Ireland, of which I believe Gary Hastings is a minister. I think the correct title is “Reverend”.
And isn’t the name of fiddler being referred to Gerry Harrington ?
Sorry - I’m a stickler for names and titles, with people as well as tunes .
Guess that’s “Father” Seamus Quinn and “Reverend” Gary Hastings I was thinking about.
However, yes in this case, we’re referring to Peter Horan and Gerry Harrington.
Kevin Krell
Aye, you’re right that would be Pandit Gerry Harrington on fiddle. Look forward to it
I wouldn’t mind a flute duet album of Peter Horan & Rev. Gary Hastings either. ![]()
Have to get a hold of that Horan&Finn revording on CD, sounds like great stuff.
Markus
More likely ’ Harrington’ … but OC I could be wrong.
C of I? Naw it would not matter, such mistakes often occur.
Worse would be, thinking him a Parson, asking a Priest how’s the missus.
BTW on the live at Matt Molloys there’s several mighty tracks on the end with Peter Horan on fiddle!
So there yar neeeuuuooouuuwwww! Any offers for a swap of MP3s will be honored due to the popularity of Sligo music these days.
I rang Comhaltas in Dublin and they said that the Music of Sligo CD is ready but they are waiting a while before releasing it so as not to clash with the one just made with Peter and Gerry, so it won’t be out till later this year
