I have been trying to find Kevin Crawford’s D Flute Album, does anyone know where it’s still available? Green Linnet said they are not pressing it anymore. Does anyone know if Matt Molloy plays any album with just a D flute? Does he play all his albums with E flat or is it B flat?
I was under the impression that only the first Matt Molloy album was exclusively with an Eflat flute. I could well be wrong - I don’t try to play along with his albums (what’s the use?).
As for the (excellent) Kevin Crawford album - you might want to try “The Knotted Chord” (knottedchord.com) - their web site indicates that they carry it. I’m shocked that Green Linnet has let it go out of print.
I ripped most of the tracks from the Matt Molloy album, pitch shifted them to D with Transcribe. Great to practice with!
Are you talking about his “In Good Company” CD? He plays mostly D flute with only five of seventeen tracks in either Eb or Bb. I had no trouble getting this at Amazon.com

Nope, there’s another Crawford CD, called “D Flute Album” which has, indeed, gone out of print in the US.

About the Malloy albums…he seems to play D, Eb, and Bb on just about all the albums (except what I believe is his second album).
I recommend Molly’s Heathery Breeze. One of my favorites. Phenomenal flute, and I’ll tell you…after hearing Drowsy Maggie and Heathery Breeze/Long Strand on the Bb flute, I called Pat Olwell immediately to order a low Bb. He also plays a B flute on this album as well. Lots of D flute of course…and some Eb. I’m less enamored with the Eb flute, but the tunes can easily be trascribed.

Yes, Crawford’s “D Flute Album” is superb. But hard to find.. ![]()

Try Mulligan Records - they list it as being available.

The store is in Galway and the listing may not be up to date bu its worth an email or a phone call.

I read this on Brad Hurley’s Irish Flute Guide( http://www.firescribble.net/flute/index.html ) today about the re-issue of Kevin Crawford’s D Flute album:
January, 2002: The Kevin Crawford CD “D Flute Album” has been out of print since the licence with Green Linnet ended. Kevin has advised that he will reissue this CD in the near future. It will be available for ordering from The Knotted Chord Web site and I’ll post a notice on this page when it’s available. People wishing to be advised personally should email info@knottedchord.com
This is great news! I ordered this from Knotted chord about a week ago and they told me that it comes in sparadically and they would send it out when and if they get it. Thanks I can’t waite to get it.
Hi Folks,
Delighted to hear that there are still a few people interested in getting hold of my “D Flute Album”. It is now available from the Lunasa website, www.lunasa.ie go to the online shop at the site and its there along with “In Good Company”, Sean Smyths “Blue Fiddle”, Cillian Vallelys “Callan Bridge” and of course all the Lunasa albums.
Lunasa are recording there 6th album at the minute for release in January 2006 and I am also recording a solo flute album this summer for release next year too.
I hope this is of some help.
Whistlin’Dixie’s hero. Sigh. ![]()
Oh, and BTW, Green Linnet are still offering both of Kevin’s albums (D Flute and In Good Company) as free downloads albeit in realplayer format (which of course means you can record them and convert to MP3 format (or burn to disk).
Dunno if you knew that, Kevin?

how do you record them, Gary? I’ve been dying to get some of those Radio na Gaeltachta recordings onto a CD, but can’t figure out the how of it.
Good news on Kevin’s CD(s)! I’m off to the site today.
Also, for anyone who likes FABULOUS concertina & piping, “Callan Bridge” is a nice one.
Well, you need a program like “Audacity” (which is free) from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Which you set to record… then you open the link and play the soundfile in realplayer. Anything that comes out of the soundcard is then recorded by Audacity. When you’re done, you save the file in Audacity. That’s it.
Well, shoot fire, boys! I’ve got Audacity, but it never occurred to me it might do .ra or .smil. (Not very observant, is she?) Thank you! I love the Late Session and wouldn’t mind being able to re-listen to it in the car, etc. Thanks, Gary!!! Yippeeeee!
I think I have a copy of the D flute CD. I wasn’t taken with it, so I’d be happy to sell or trade it. Let me check when I get home.
Entire downloadable Real Audio files on a site. That’s nuts! Do you think they were originally set up as Pay ‘n’ Play but then abandoned or forgotten?
I’ve “caught” the audio from hundreds of Real Audio files, it’s quite easy once you get the hang of it. Green Linnet’s files are rather low-fi, though, I snagged the D Flute and Hayes/Cahill Live off there and they’re altogether muddy sounding, so get yours from Kevin himself so he can go on being a world renowned musician and snappy dresser!
Green Linnet is still crashing and burning anyway, aren’t they? Not on the best of terms with artists, low sales, stuff like that?
I think so. Too bad. I remember something about a big fuss with Cherish The Ladies, too. As I recall the issue is that while they really helped legitimize and popularize this music, it seems they didn’t keep up in the “paying people what they’re worth” department.
Again, too bad. It seems to be a regular occurrence these days in many business categories.
Good to hear we can look forward to another solo album, both CDs get regular play in my Discman.
